Bauli se zovu Bauli, jer su to ludi ljudi. Reč „Baul“ potiče od sanskritskog korena reči VATUL. Što znači: lud, pod uticajem vetra. Baul ne pripada nijednoj religiji. On nije ni Hinduista, ni Muhamedanac, ni Hrišćanin ni Budista. On je jednostavno ljudsko biće. Njegova pobuna je totalna. On ne pripada nikome; on pripada samo sebi.

Živi na ničijoj zemlji: nijedna zemlja nije njegova, nijedna religija nije njegova, nijedan sveti spis nije njegov. Njegova pobuna je dublja čak i od pobune Zen-majstora — jer oni barem formalno pripadaju Budizmu; barem formalno obožavaju Budu.

“Ludi ljudi su divni ljudi”
Oni su ludi samo zato što su toliko osetljivi, da ne mogu da žive u ovom ludom svetu. Ovaj ludi svet ih izluđuje! Toliko su osetljivi i ranjivi da postaju žrtve. Oni nisu prefrigani; oni su nevini, iskreni i pošteni ljudi. Znam mnoge lude ljude - u stvari, samo lude ljude i znam - i poštujem ih.
