Happy Galungan from Bali ✨❤️

My villa is wrapped in yellow and white today as Bali enters the ten-day celebration of Galungan. This holiday is a time that honours the victory of dharma over adharma, or the triumph of good over evil. I love how this reflects a lot of my journey this year. 🌺 Faith over fear. Alignment over chaos. Light over darkness.

During Galungan, the Balinese welcome their ancestral spirits back to Earth with prayers, offerings, and devotion. it’s a reminder that when we choose goodness, clarity, and integrity, we invite grace into our lives. The celebration ends ten days after tomorrow with Kuningan, when the ancestors return to the heavens, blessed and honoured.

This holiday occurs every 210 days, and just now out of curiosity I googled “When is Galungan in 2026?” And I realized it falls over my June Yoga Teacher Training! That was not intentional (I did intentionally plan my March YTT to fall over Nyepi and Ogoh Ogoh however) - but this one was an accident that I just realized now!

Come celebrate Galungan here in Bali next June during my June Yoga Teacher Training. It’s the most beautiful time to be on the island - immersed in tradition, spirituality, and the heart of Balinese culture.

I am now really limiting my online teaching as I teach more and more in person here in Bali! Here’s what I’m teaching in January…
1. Bhavagad Gita Studies - 10 weeks, 2 hour classes looking at this spiritual text - new course, only teaching it once live
2. How to Meditate - 3 Days of 90 minute workshops on practical application of mantra meditation in your daily life
3. Yoga Sutras Deep Dive - one sutra a week, meditation, and discussion - a living philosophy & practice class 🙏🏻 (you’ll get live on demand videos to watch too)

Would love to connect with you online! DM me if you have questions about any of the courses!

I never planned on having a cat. I actually was a bit afraid of them. Then March 2020 happened. Covid hit, the school I worked at closed, and my boyfriend at the time (who was 20 years older than me and also my boss at a yoga studio 🤣) broke up with me and fired me all in one week. I must have given off *disaster* vibes to the people logging into my new online zoom yoga platform (which later became ) as someone recommended I foster a cat. 🤣 I had a look at the foster page and saw P and it was love at first sight.

My mom wrote me a really beautiful text today about how fate brought me and P together, and she’s right. P arrived out of nowhere when I needed companionship. She witnessed my rebuilding and was a protector during a vulnerable period of my life.

P spent time at the vet in May whilst I was in North America & the vet reported she was doing well when she left. Two weeks ago, Rory got here before I did (he’d met Princess before but only briefly cuz he wasn’t yet my BF! 🤣) Rory spent 24 hours at my house with Princess before I arrived where she snuggled with him lots (he sent me pics!) But when I got back she stopped coming near us both.

Now I see her bonding with Rory 2 weeks ago when he arrived as the handover. He moved in, and it was like she was like “I can finally let go now. Alex is in good hands.”

When her soul left her body this afternoon it was as if she was saying that her work here is done.

Today at the vet in her last moments I told her the story of her life (as much of it that I know.) I don’t know about the days on the streets and I don’t know if she was ten or fifteen years old. But I know she became the star of a COVID Online Yoga Community, and then went to yoga retreats, stayed in five star hotels…. So many adventures that I even forgot parts of the story when I was telling them to her. “Oh ya! And then we lived on the beach for six weeks!”

Ram Dass wrote in Polishing the Mirror, “Death is not an error… it is like taking off a tight shoe.”

The last photo is the last one I took of her - with Rory last week.

I am so proud of my yoga teacher training graduates (and other community members) that have gone on to start successful retreat businesses. It’s really quite amazing as I know how much time and effort goes into preparing these events. If you are seeking a retreat somewhere around the world, here’s some of the amazing events coming up organized by our grads and community members:

1. Dupe (from the UK!) was a guest on Sober Yoga Girl Podcast a few years ago. She is running a Bali retreat in June and still has spaces left.
2. Carolyn Millward graduated both our 200 Hour YTT in 2022 and our 300 Hour YTT in 2025. She is also a student in our advanced Yoga Sutra Study at the moment. She has a yoga safari in South Africa this summer.
3. Carolyn Clark graduated from the 200 Hour YTT last July and will be graduating from the 300 Hour YTT this September (after doing many online modules and will just do adjustments and assists in person this fall!) Carolyn is leading a retreat in Bali this November.
4. Rachel Brady, who’s graduated from basically every Yoga Teacher Training ever possible from The Mindful Life Practice, is running a Embodied Women’s Retreat this November in the UK!
5. Samantha Dunman graduated our Sober Curious YTT in 2022. She now is leading retreats around the world, and has an upcoming New Years Eve retreat in Blue Ridge Mountains, GA.

Feel free to reach out to everyone directly and ask them about their retreats - we’ve tagged them in this post to make it easy!

Our very first retreat officially as is almost over! ( and I led our first one as a team last year but this is our first one as the new community AFRetreats!) It’s been a week of learning how to meditate with Rory (a great intro for our new guests and a great review for our return guests.) As well I’ve taught morning yoga and chanting each day. I’ve led sharing circles and Rory has led sober coaching. We led our first Kirtan ever together last night. It’s been magical and the perfect combination of accessing yoga (union) through body, mind and spirit.

Our teaching styles fit together well and we bring together a range of people from our different communities all over the world who have similar goals - to live a connected life alcohol free (that’s why our shirts say connectedAF!)

After this week, I am even more excited for our next events as a collab. In July, Rory will be both a student and a teacher on my July 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training. He and I will be leading nightly Kirtans and he will teach How to Meditate (Vedic Meditation). Myself and my friend Jenn will be teaching the yoga teacher training content. We practice vinyasa and yin and learn how to teach both styles in a trauma informed way. It’s well rounded and a self discovery journey as much as an educational one. This years group is much smaller than my past groups, and it’s the perfect intimate setting to learn and grow. You don’t need to be alcohol free to join the yoga teacher training (no substances consumed during the 21 days however.)

If this is calling you sign up now! Snag one of the last rooms.

I can’t wait to go on this adventure with you. ❤️

(Other upcoming events include our Mexico New Years Eve retreat Dec 27 - Jan 3, India Feb 22 - March 5, and our Bali Nyepi Silent day retreat which will be in March of 2026!)

I’m excited about the new merchandise/yoga props shelf that was built at my house in Bali whilst I was traveling! I have a small yoga shala on my rooftop where I teach private/small group classes and this is below the stairs leading up to it! I don’t run my retreats and trainings at my house because it’s too small, but if you do come to Bali for a retreat or training with me I’ll bring you over here for a visit! (I’m also not the best at folding so excuse the not so perfect piles 🤣)

“Alex - what is the difference with your different online offerings?” A commonly asked question! I now have three offerings online that I’ll be offering for the rest of this year that you can join. Here’s what they are.

📕YOGA SUTRA COMMUNITY (Sangha.) 📕This is our monthly membership that was formerly Sober Girls Yoga. It’s the same informal group of sober and spiritual women coming together but the name change reflects our deeper focus on spirituality in the sober journey, as opposed to sobriety. In June our theme is the Klesha (causes of suffering) and I’m leading three classes a week: 8:30am est Sundays, 7:30am est Mondays and 8:30pm est Thursdays. Join anytime and leave anytime. There’s about 20 members of this so it’s super intimate.

📗YOGA SUTRA RECOVERY 📗This is a new 12 week program I’ve been developing for a small group of only 10 women. It’s for you if you want more specific support on how to develop a sadhana (daily spiritual practice) to support your sobriety. I’ve taken the 12 most important things from Patanjalis yoga sutras. We meet once a week at 7:30pm est on Sundays starting June 1 and there are 8 spots left.

📘 YOGA SUTRA STUDY 📘 this is an in depth academic study of patanjalis yoga sutras and it’s for serious students and teachers. We study sutra by sutra and discuss them academically. I’m running one more cohort of this this year starting in August. You can sign up now though to save your spot (someone already did today!)

That’s it! The three offerings. ❤️ There is one for everyone at every stage in their journey. I hope to see you in one of them. The link is in my bio but you can also comment on the post for more info.

I have arrived in Scottsdale, Arizona to teach this weekend at Sober in the City with and ! I am so excited to be here. As I sat in the uber on the way to the Andaz this afternoon, I thought about how meaningful it is to me when I am able to share the practices that supported my sobriety journey with others on the same journey and hold space for them. It is an honor and a privilege to do this work and I can’t wait to meet so many of you over this weekend in Scottsdale and share yoga with you. ❤️ Lots of synchronicities have already happened since I started this journey and I’m going to be writing about them tonight at www.soberyogagirl.com . ❤️ Lots of love, Alexandra

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali teaches that Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. 🧘🏽‍♀️ These fluctuations, called Vṛttis, shape how we experience life.
When the Vṛttis are busy, we’re stuck in stress and suffering. 😵‍💫 When still, we glimpse our true self — peaceful, clear, and free. 🌟

The goal of Yoga:
🧘🏽‍♀️ Quiet the Vṛttis,
🌱 Return to your natural state of peace.

Patanjali describes 5 types of mental fluctuations:
1️⃣ Pramāṇa – Right knowledge 🧠
2️⃣ Viparyaya – Misperception 🙃
3️⃣ Vikalpa – Imagination 💭
4️⃣ Nidra – Sleep 😴
5️⃣ Smṛti – Memory 🖼️

Each colors our reality. But through practice (abhyāsa) and non-attachment (vairāgya), we can calm them. 🌊 Every mindful step brings us closer to stillness.

✨ Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ ✨ (Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.)

The theme of this month’s Sutra Sangha with is the Vrittis. The Vrittis come from Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Sutras 1.5-1.11.They are: right knowledge, wrong knowledge, imagination, sleep, and memory. It’s important to remember that no thought categories themselves are good or bad.

This week in the sangha we being introduced to our thoughts and starting to develop witness concisousness around our thoughts.

Join the Sutra Sangha to get in on our intimate conversation around this.

The Sutra Sangha is meeting for a yoga class tomorrow live on Zoom, where you can join Alex to learn more about the embodiment of this practice, at 9am EST.
