Tickets are booked and it's now official! In October, the staff of Kaia Wellness Retreats will be heading to Laos in order to run the Luang Prabang Half Marathon: "La Procession".
We have decided to do this for a few reasons. First, in order to support the organization, "Friends Without a Border" that is committed to providing high-quality healthcare to the children of Southeast Asia. Second, because we are going to represent the heart of Kaia Wellness, which is service and education within the realm of health and wellness while contributing to the needs of the community in each place we go. We are really looking forward to sharing more about it as we learn how we will be more specifically involved!
If you are interested to know more, below is a quick summary on the marathon and the cause we have the privilege of supporting.
"In 1999, "Friends" built and opened Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Since that time, AHC has treated over 1.2 million children, trained thousands of healthcare professionals, and is considered one of only three essential healthcare institutions in the country.
In November, 2013, Friends celebrated a new pediatric hospital called Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC). Scheduled to open Spring of 2015, LFHC will include: Inpatient & Outpatient Departments, 24 beds, Emergency Room, Intensive Care Unit, Operation Theater, Laboratory, Pharmacy, Radiology, lecture rooms & library to teach paediatric medicine to the future leaders of the hospital, kitchen & laundry for families visiting the hospital, and a vegetable garden to teach families how to prepare nutritious meals. Utilising the successful model of Treatment + Education + Prevention achieved at AHC, Friends will also implement outreach programs to teach children and families health promotion and disease prevention.
Friends is currently conducting a baseline medical survey in the Luang Prabang Province. The survey will help Friends gain a better understanding of the health needs of the children in the area as well as ensure the doctors and nurses of LFHC are providing the best possible care."
