As I celebrate eight wonderful years of being a certified yoga instructor, I find it fitting to reflect on the Eightfold Path of Yoga. This ancient guide provides a profound framework for living a balanced and purposeful life, both on and off the yoga mat. Let’s delve into each of these eight limbs and explore how they have shaped my journey as an instructor and continue to influence my practice.

1. Yama: Ethical Standards
Yama is the first limb, and it focuses on ethical standards and integrity. It consists of five moral guidelines:
• Ahimsa (Non-violence): Emphasizing compassion and non-violence in thoughts, words, and actions.
• Satya (Truthfulness): Encouraging honesty and truthfulness.
• Asteya (Non-stealing): Respecting others’ possessions and time.
• Brahmacharya (Celibacy or Moderation): Practicing self-control.
• Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness): Letting go of greed and materialism.
These principles have guided me in creating a safe and respectful space for my students, fostering an environment of trust and mutual respect.

2. Niyama: Personal Discipline
Niyama refers to self-discipline and spiritual observances:
• Saucha (Purity): Maintaining cleanliness of the body and mind.
• Santosha (Contentment): Embracing contentment with what we have.
• Tapas (Self-discipline): Cultivating willpower and determination.
• Svadhyaya (Self-study): Engaging in introspection and self-study.
• Ishvara Pranidhana (Surrender to God): Acknowledging the presence of a higher power.
These practices help me remain focused and centered, both in my personal life and as an instructor, allowing me to offer guidance with clarity and conviction.

Yoga is often associated with physical postures and stretching exercises performed on a mat. However, the essence of yoga transcends the physical practice and extends into our daily lives. This notion emphasizes that the true practice of yoga occurs off the mat, influencing our thoughts, actions, and interactions with others. 🫶🏾

Practicing yoga off the mat can lead to significant positive changes in our lives. It encourages a balanced lifestyle, enhances emotional resilience, and improves relationships with others. Ultimately, it fosters a sense of inner peace and contentment that transcends the physical practice, allowing us to live more fulfilling and meaningful lives. 🧘🏾‍♀️

While the physical practice of yoga offers numerous benefits, the real transformation occurs when we take the principles learned on the mat and apply them to our everyday lives. By doing so, we embrace the true spirit of yoga, creating a ripple effect of positivity and mindfulness in the world. 🙏🏾
