Many children are trying their absolute best at school, but it can still feel harder than it should.
Sometimes the reason isn’t obvious.

A large study of primary school children in Northern Ireland found that over a third of P5 children and almost half of P2 children had retained primitive reflexes. These are early movement patterns that should usually integrate in infancy, but can sometimes remain active.

If reflexes are still present, children may have to work harder to sit still, focus, coordinate their movements or process information. That extra effort can make reading, writing and concentrating far more tiring than we realise.

In the same study, children who followed the INPP daily movement programme showed clear improvements in balance, coordination and cognitive development – all important foundations for learning.

For parents, this is reassuring. Struggles at school are not always about effort, behaviour or intelligence. Sometimes they are linked to physical development that simply needs support.

A reflex integration program doesn’t require any expensive equipment. A child’s body is usually enough to build stronger neuropathways in their brain.

Reflex integration exercises can look simple on the surface. A few movements. A short daily routine. Nothing dramatic.

But they work directly with the nervous system. That means the order, pace and intensity really matter.

If exercises are introduced too quickly or pushed too hard, some children can become unusually tired, frustrated or emotionally unsettled. Not because something is wrong, but because the nervous system needs careful pacing.

A trained practitioner understands how to introduce movements gradually, how to adapt them when needed and how to support a child if emotions shift during the process.

When it is done properly, progress feels steady. Confidence builds. The work fits into daily life without overwhelm.

Support should feel manageable and sustainable, not rushed.

This is so needed in our schools today. Every behaviour has a root cause. INPP can help you get to the root and reduce classroom issues.

The child who can't sit still might not have a behaviour problem.

They might have an unfinished body.

We're trained to look upward when a child struggles — to attention, motivation, intelligence, home life.

But what if the answer lies further down?

In the nervous system. In the body itself.

There's a concept called neuromotor immaturity — the idea that some children enter the classroom still carrying primitive reflexes that should have integrated in their earliest months of life.

These reflexes aren't a diagnosis. They're a developmental stage that hasn't fully completed.

And when they persist, they can interfere with everything we associate with being "ready to learn" — sitting still, tracking a line of text, copying from a board, regulating emotions on the playground.

Not because the child isn't trying.data: Because the physical foundations aren't yet in place.

Sally Goddard Blythe and the Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology (INPP) have spent decades researching exactly this — the connection between physical development, central nervous system maturation, and learning readiness. Their work is documented and accessible at inpp.org.uk.

The practical response is the INPP Schools Programme — a 10-minute daily movement routine, led by a qualified teacher, with the whole class.

Schools running this programme have reported outcomes including 40 minutes more concentration time per day, playground incidents reduced by half, and measurable improvements in learning outcomes.

Not through additional intervention. Through addressing what was missing at the foundation.

12 more experienced teachers are now taking this approach into their schools as part of the current cohort — a signal that this is gaining real traction in the classroom.

If you're a teacher or SENCO who has tried the usual approaches and still feels like something foundational is being missed — this might be the lens you've been looking for.

The vestibular system, located in the inner ear, is the primary sensory sense for balance, spacial orientation and coordinating movements with the eyeballs. It detects acceleration of the head in a straight or angular plain, allowing the brain to maintain stable vision, and posture. It is essential for us to balance.

Join us for a talk with a qualified Neurodevelopmental Therapist on how gross motor skills can impact learning and behaviour. This talk will go over the role different senses play in learning and how retained primitive reflexes can cause gross motor issues which, in turn, can have an impact on learning and behaviour. This talk is suitable for parents, grandparents, teachers, SNSa, ANAs and anyone working in childcare. In Sproai agus Sport on Wednesday 21st January at 7pm.
