Ah the joy of having your own hens💛 we give them food, water, grass and love. In return they give us the most beautiful and delicious eggs. All different size and colours. The more grass they eat, the darker the yolk gets, sometimes it’s almost orange.

It’s not always easy. Some get sick, others get taken by the fox.. and in the wintertime when they’re not laying any eggs, they still need to be fed and their house has to be cleaned. On wet and cold days I sometimes wonder if it’s worth the work. And yes, it is so worth it💛

Morning everyone! Just a little message from the baker.. Yushin loves to pick dandelions for me, especially the puff ball ones. He picks it gently, gives it to me and says “Mamma here’s a beautiful flower for you! But you have to be very careful with it. Look, you have to hold it like this, just use two fingers. Or you can blow on it if you like, then you won’t have a flower now but you’ll have a lot next year.”
I think to myself that what so many regard as a w**d, my 4 year old sees as something so beautiful and delicate, something that needs a lot of care. And it gives me so much hope for the future💚

My dear mother would have turned 70 today. But as many of you know, unfortunately she passed away shortly after turning 47.
My husband will be 47 soon.. recently my oldest son turned 16 and my daughter will be 13 in a few months, the same age me and my sister were when we lost our mother. And my older brother and sister were barely adults.
When I look at these numbers I’m reminded that we were all so young.. for a long time I used to think and feel like 16 means being a grownup. I don’t think so anymore.

You weren’t keen on the type of celebrations that meant you had to be the centre of people’s attention. But I hope you’re somewhere up celebrating, even just a small bit. That there’s a big bouquet of yellow, red and orange calendula, Gerbera and tulips in the middle of the table and that someone has baked a big Pavlova for you. That’s what I would have done if you were here.

My son wasn’t the only one who celebrated his birthday this weekend. I’ve had the pleasure of making a few different types of birthday cakes:
First there was a chocolate cake with chocolate and mascarpone mousse. Then a bigger version of a Mirjam’s kitchen classic; lemon sponge, raspberry mousse and creamy mascarpone icing.
The third one is a very simple sponge cake filled with homemade raspberry jam and topped with fresh raspberry.
And the last one was a lemon and poppyseed cake with light lemony cream cheese icing.
All made with lots of love and a touch of Mirjam🌼

It’s always so lovely to make a cake for someone’s special day💛
