May Eve

During May Eve, known in ancient Ireland as the Bealtaine (formally a festival for the fire and sun god Baal), fairies have the greatest power over the things of this earth. No man, woman or child should venture from their home lest they become permanent residents of fairyland. Flowers should be affixed to the windows of homes so that fairies might not enter and take hold of desirable mortals. Sheep, goats and cows should be locked within doors, with all the appropriate protective aids of primroses, holy water and fire about the animals to ward off fairy powers. Every Hawthorn tree has a fairy band disporting in rings about it. The Glas Gaivlen ( Glas Gaibhnenn ) the fairy cow with green spots, graces the farmers’ fields and brings them luck.
On May Eve they seek and celebrate beauty; but being in such good spirits, they frequently take pleasure in an old crone or withered man and thus in their amusement spirit them away.
On May Day several precautions should be taken, for if a spell is placed on that day its powers last until next May Eve. Neither fire nor water should be given from the house that day or else the turf might not burn nor the water rise up from the well.
Although May Eve is most subject to fairy influence, fairies consider all the month of May their special time. Fairies do their most travelling in the month of May and hence are quite aware of human happenings. They are given to resting by lakes and streams where they net and capture solitary mortals wandering in secluded places. Many are taken and most who appear to die in the month of May, especially children and beautiful women, are actually healthy and alive in the land of the sidhe. . .
