We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mary O'Rourke.
Mary and her late husband Enda were my Godparents and had a strong connection to my family In the earlier days.
As my Mother Cherry Keyes explained to me,
Every Monday morning, Our house was utilised as a meeting place where Mary would come and be there for the people to support and help them in anyway she could. Mary worked tirelessly on behalf of the families and communities of Athlone and the wider region of Westmeath.
As my mother Cherry said in her own words,
"Mary O'Rourke was a legend of her time.
In the latter years Mary welcomed me to join the FF party, where I feel very fortunate to have had the experience of grasping an understanding of politics, it was such a privilege to have being afforded the opportunity to learn from this wonderful , strong Woman,
On behalf of myself and my family, we are very grateful to Mary O'Rourke for all she has done for us, and I'm sure there are hundreds of other families and communities in Athlone, Westmeath and surrounding areas who can resonate with us.
We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to Aengus and Feargal and the extended lenihan and O'Rourke families at this very difficult time.
May Mary Rest in Peace.
