Busy day for our volunteers in Rathdrum today, with two ambulances on duty at separate events across the county.

Earlier, one of our crews provided cover at the 2026 Masters Grasstrack Championship, hosted by Rathdrum Offroad Club .

It was a fantastic day’s racing, and we’d like to congratulate all the riders on their skill and determination out on the track. A big well done also to the organisers for putting together such a large and well-run event — the atmosphere spoke for itself, and there’s no doubt the spectators went home happy.

Later in the day, our second crew deployed to Echolan Park, Aughrim for the 3rd round of the Christy Ring Cup clash between Wicklow GAA and Meath GAA .

Congratulations to both sets of players on a very sporting and entertaining game of hurling, with great skill and commitment shown throughout.

Both ambulances and crews are now safely back at base, restocked and ready for their next outing.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.

It is with deep regret and sadness to inform you of the sudden passing of Vol. Niamh Johnston.

Niamh was a dedicated EMT in the Blanchardstown unit who was always eager to learn. She was a kind and friendly person who loved to have a laugh. She will be sorely missed.

Our thoughts are with her family in this difficult time.

RIP Niamh.

🚑 Exciting Update from Order of Malta Ireland – Rathdrum Unit 🚑

We’re delighted to announce that, following a successful trial period, our unit will be introducing a new Electric Response Motorbike (ERM) into operational service from April onwards.

The ERM has been specifically designed for rapid response in areas with limited vehicle access, such as forestry trails, GAA grounds during peak attendance, and large-scale outdoor events.

The bike is fully equipped with:
⚡ Oxygen system featuring locally sourced Wicklow air for that extra freshness
⚡ Integrated trauma pack and bleed control equipment, strategically organised so the one item you need is always at the very bottom
⚡ Blue light and siren system compliant with emergency response standards, with an added “mammy shout” setting for immediate crowd clearance
⚡ High-capacity onboard battery, compatible with AED lead connection in emergency situations where alternative power sources may be required
⚡ Heated seat function to assist with volunteer comfort during extended standby duties
⚡ Voice-activated “Where’s the patient?” locator system for busy crowd environments
⚡ Automatic GAA score updates displayed on the dash to maintain situational awareness at local events

Over the past number of weeks, the bike has been quietly tested at a number of local events, where it has significantly reduced response times in hard-to-reach areas.
Initial feedback from our volunteers has been extremely positive, particularly noting its manoeuvrability and ability to navigate through crowds safely and efficiently.

Training for selected members will begin shortly, with the ERM expected to complement our existing fleet

We would like to thank all involved in supporting this initiative and look forward to rolling this out further across the region.

Our volunteers were delighted to provide ambulance cover at Echelon Park, Aughrim on Saturday for Round 7 of the Allianz Hurling League between Wicklow GAA and Louth GAA.

It was a very sporting and entertaining game, with great skill and determination on display from both sides. Well done to all players and management for a fantastic contest, and to the supporters who created a brilliant atmosphere on the day.

Meanwhile, our Advanced Paramedic was flying the flag for the unit elsewhere on Saturday and Sunday— even if it meant getting the passport out to head “down south” to assist our friends in the Order of Malta Ireland Ambulance Corps Wexford Unit at a quad racing event organised by Wexford Off-Road Motorcycle & Quad Club in Clonroche.

It was a fantastic event with some exceptional competitors on display. Well done to all involved for putting on such a great day!
