Brassicas are one of my favorite menopause superfoods!

Naturally, women going through perimenopause will experience fluctuations and swings in circulating hormones which will drive unpleasant symptoms. However, there are many ways to help manage this process to reduce symptoms and protect the body from disease.

This is where the humble brassica aka cruciferous vegetable comes in! These are foods such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choi, rocket lettuce, radish, turnip, kohlrabi and kale.

Brassicas contain some really powerful chemicals which aid in the 3 phases of detoxification by the liver. Some of these are -3-carbinol which breaks down into ( ) in the stomach as well as , and chemicals which induce the enzyme involved in phase 1.

In phase 1 oestrogen is broken down into 2-OH, 4-OH, 16-OH and oestriol. These are highly reactive metabolites and have been shown to increase risk of cancer if they are not further conjugated in phase 2 where they go through methylation, sulphation and glucuronidation!

Phase two takes steps to make the metabolites less reactive/oxidative and acts like a recycling line sending some to be reused while others will be excreted.

These super-power brassicas are beneficial for most people, but are a winner in menopause due to supporting both phase 1, phase 2 detoxification as well as elimination! This reduces symptoms and more importantly plays a roll in reducing risk for certain cancers, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Learn more ways manage perimenopause and menopause naturally... protect your health, feel energized and alive!

Rise with the Sun

Seek your own peace.

Do you have a mornig routine that fills your cup? if so, i'd love to hear about it!

For many of us... Life is so full that we fall into bed and struggle to pull ourselves out of it again in the morning. Then we race around... straight into the hustle of getting ready for work, school, or whatever is on for the day and are out the door or logged into the computer before we have even taken a breath.

Morning sunlight can provide many health benefits, such as boosting vitamin D production, regulating sleep cycles, improving mood, and reducing the risk of certain diseases like osteoporosis and depression.

So even on days when we didn't sleep well and our energy is low and a dark cloud hangs over our head... pushing ourselves up and outside can begin to break that cycle.

What if YOU broke that cycle?

What if you gave yourself a Gift?
of time,
of thought,
of breath,
of movement,
of light
of peace.

Make a date with yourself tomorrow morning that you can't cancel or reschedule.

Set your alarm just 10 minutes earlier. Even if the sun has yet to rise or the day is already underway.... Give yourself 10 minutes.

Take your blurry eyes and sleepy head outside in the fresh air, rise your arms to the sky and breathe deeply.

repeat this 10 times. Feel the cool air on your skin. let the life flow into your being. Just be there. Awaken in the present moment.

Try not to think about what must be done. Right now it is your time. 10 minutes.

Bring your journal, your cup of tea, stretch your body, listen to your breath, to the wind. to the sound of the morning. whatever feels natural. But... watch how those 10 minutes can begin to change your day. And soon you'll be craving the sunrise.

Every morning the rising sun invites us and inspires us to begin again. Debasish Mridhall

Not all heroes wear capes!

Oestrogen, The Chief-regulator & Brain-Protector!

Like all hormones, oestrogen is a powerful chemical involved in nearly every process of the body. From our reproductive function, to tissue growth, recovery, bone health, immunity, gut activity, weight management, brain function and energy metabolism. The function outside of reproduction is often overlooked.

Oestrogen is vital to energy production and balance in brain function, keeping cells healthy and active, especially in the region in charge of planning, attention and memory! Oestrogen is also highly involved in protecting the neurons in the brain and its levels influence the production of GABA which offers us a sense of calm and releases endorphins!

Oestrogen supports the formation of new connections between neurons. These connections improve our resilience and adaptability to changes and stressors.

Its importance should not be underestimated.

Excess can be a driver in many disease processes including cancer, and too little is often a catalyst to osteoporosis, poor, sluggish gut function, heart complications, neurological degeneration and cognitive decline to name a few.

This important hormone is made by our ovaries, adrenals and fat cells. Yet the ovaries age faster than any other part of a women's body. While it is completely natural for this hormone to decline as we go through perimenopause and into menopause, it is essential to keep the production up to avoid unwanted symptoms and complications. Thus our adrenals need to be healthy and vibrant at a time when most women are at heightened levels of stress in their careers and families.

Join us on May 3rd for our 4 week Women's Wellness Course where we will dive deep into ways to best manage perimenopause and menopause naturally...using nutrition and lifestyle as preventative medicine to keep you feeling sharp and vibrant.

It may be common knowledge that the health of our GUT and the microbes within it are integral to our overall well being.

Yet, with all the spot light the gut gets, we still forget. Poor Gut health does not necessarily present itself as stomach pain or IBS.

Our gut influences and plays a critical role in our immunity, mood, sleep, bone density, skin and our hormone levels.

Actually not only does the gut microbiota influence the levels of Oestrogen, Progesterone and Corticosterone, it is also, itself, influenced by s*x hormones.

Thus when we are working on hormone balance at any stage of life, we must look to the gut.

When working with women in perimenopause and menopause, that is exactly where we begin.

Join us for an in-depth 4-week course for women on the perimenopause/ menopause journey.

Our course begins May 3rd.

Day one is all about Gut Health!

We will discuss challenges, strategies, tools, testing and make some tasty recipes to help you get started.

Feel free to send me a DM for more information, or go to my website inguthealth.ie.

I hope to see you there.

Matcha 🍵 🌱 green tea is one of my favourite ❤️

It’s full of healthy Buzz without the jitters!

This amazing superfood will
✔️improve
✔️reduce
✔️reduce which can damage cells and cause chronic disease.

Matcha benefits the body by being:
✔️Anti-stress🧘 meaning it helps reduce the effects of cortisol (stress hormone) on the adrenals.
✔️Rich is L-theanine which creates alpha waves in the brain to produce a state of calm and alertness.
✔️ blood sugar stabiliser - the polysaccharides protect against insulin spikes.
✔️major antioxidant rich in flavonoids and polyphenols.

It is not to be confused with green tea in a tea bag. While both have health benefits, matcha is harvested from the young spring shoots of the tea plant and is dried and milled into a powder, Thus you consume the whole leaf vs. Just the infused water.

Some research estimates it has a minimum of 3x and up to 137x the EGCG (catechin) content compared to ordinary green tea. This is a polyphenol best known for its ability to
✔️reduce inflammation
✔️aid weight loss
✔️reduces risk of Alzheimer’s decline
And fight against:
✔️heart disease
✔️diabetes
✔️some cancers

Matcha has a gorgeous earthy taste and can be enjoyed warm or cold
as part of your daily ritual.

Add it to your water bottle with lemon for a sports recovery drink.

Make it as a tea or a matcha latte with plant milk

Add it to a smoothie or try my recipe for matcha fudge. 😋🍵

Radiant Roots Broth

Radiant Roots is founded by Tara Zuluaga Dorgan, Nutritional Therapist and Medicinal Chef. She is passionate about using food as medicine to revive our innate capacity to heal and thrive. She is a lover of bone broth and has been doing research in the are for the past few years.

We are currently serving 4 nourishing broths via the NEIGHBOUR FOOD Markets in Cuskinny Court, Cobh and Douglas, Cork. We use Organic Dexter beef for our Classic and our Golden broths from Duhallow Organics. Our Classic Organic Chicken broth is made using organic chickens raised on Regan Organic Farm and our Crismon mineral broth features local mushrooms, seaweeds, vegetables and herbs creating a sweet and umami plant-based broth.

Emerging research suggests that the human gut microbiome (gut microorganisms and their genome) plays diverse physiological roles that have an immense influence on our HEALTH and WELL-BEING. 1 in 3 Americans are suffering from some form of gut related disorder and Europe is on a similar path. Radiant Roots has been busy developing Ireland’s first gut-friendly, functional food made from 100% Organic dexter beef broth. Our COLLAGEN RICH broth is FREEZE DRIED in a powdered format making it easy to mix into smoothies, baked goods and soups anywhere in the world.

Sustainability has been normal practice in Irish farming throughout history. Ireland continues to better itself and is taking a pioneering approach in food sustainability. These practices lend to an abundance of healthy, happy cows and fertile pasture land here on the Emerald Isle. We want to carry the integrity and sustainability of Irish farming right into our products. Our customers can rest assured that their broth is of premium quality. We provide transparency and tractability of each batch right to the source.
