REGULATE. RELATE. REASON.

Just doing a regulating exercise once is not enough. So constantly dose! Because when we are bombarded with stress inducing factors it negates the dose. So it’s about changing the pattern of stress activation from unpredictable and uncontrollable to more moderate and predictable. Stress and distress is not always a bad thing, as it can build resilience but over exposure is not a good thing. If we can have a schedule, get up, get dressed, do a bit of home schooling and have a structure this makes the unpredictable, predictable. It helps build resilience. So people need to bring structure and predictability into our lives and as a family. How we do things with our family, not in a rigid but structured way, is what we need to do. And that be may be including letting them play their video game for a certain length of time, as that helps the child regulate himself but within a structure. Whatever it is that the child finds regulating.

Dr Perry of the The Child Trauma Academy, Houston, suggested we limit viewing the news and listening to the constant updates on the virus and its effects. This applies to children and especially for those who are feeling the stress as well as those who are not, as the stress inducing aspect will still get into your head. He suggests there are 3 ways of self-regulating.

1. Top down - where you use your cortex, your thinking part of the brain, to say “oh I don’t need to get nervous because I probably won’t get the virus” but this doesn’t work great for people who are prone to stress. They are too overwhelmed to think this way.

2. Bottom up – the more emotional part of your brain, when you take a walk, deep breathes, listening to music, do art, have a constant pattern of regulatory stuff. The key thing is one walk won’t do it but you need to do something every 30 mins or so, even for 5 mins. Deep breathing, stretching, yoga, walking. Whatever it is that helps you regulate. This is called “dosing” and you need to start dosing all through the day. This is the big challenge. The major way we regulate is through others which is so difficult now, but we still need to stay physically distant but emotionally close, so instead of texting, ring or Zoom.
