Thank you, kind yogis, for your reflections on Yin Yoga and what this kind of yoga practice offers you.

The ripples of Yin extend far beyond the yoga space, I personally experience it as a truly therapeutic practice that fosters a mindfulness like no other. It has been one of the most poignant practices for me personally to manage and regulate my emotions and nurture my nervous system (more empirical information on the window of tolerance and mindfulness coming soon!)

To those who may be unfamiliar with yin, I’ll cite below what some of the most prominent figures of the practice say about it;

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga that incorporates principles of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves holding poses for extended periods, typically between 2 to 6 minutes (or longer for experienced practitioners), to target the deeper connective tissues, such as fascia, ligaments, and joints, rather than focusing primarily on the muscles. Yin Yoga is particularly effective for improving flexibility, enhancing joint mobility, and promoting mindfulness (Clark, 2019; Grilley, 2012).

The Key Characteristics of Yin Yoga:
1. Focus on Connective Tissues: Unlike dynamic or muscular styles like Vinyasa or Ashtanga, Yin Yoga emphasizes applying gentle, sustained pressure to connective tissues, improving elasticity and health.

2. Passive Poses: The poses are mostly seated or lying down and are held with minimal muscular effort.

3. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practitioners are encouraged to cultivate awareness of their breath, bodily sensations, and thoughts, fostering a meditative state.

4. Energy Flow: Yin Yoga aligns with traditional Chinese medicine concepts.
(Clark, 2019; Grilley, 2012).

💫 Yin begins again next Wednesday the 15th from 8pm-9.15pm in Ballygarvan Community Centre and will run for 6 weeks at a regular cost of €70 or a reduced cost of €54 if you need it ❤️

Happy places; feeling at home and comfortable in my body. Yoga asana (postures) have acted as a brilliant gateway for this and enabled the growth of interoceptive awareness.

Sometimes it’s slow and steady, sometimes it’s passive and still, and other times in invigorating and dynamic.

Where’s your happy place?

Nairobi, Kenya ~
The simple yet profound yoga pose known as Child's Pose, nestled on the grassy earth beneath the African sky. It's a powerful reminder of the universal language of yoga and the profound impact it can have on lives around the world.

Through the incredible work of African Yoga Project, children like him are given the opportunity to discover the transformative power of yoga, empowering them to find inner strength, resilience, and peace amidst life's challenges.

As a photographer deeply invested in the transformative power of yoga and meditation, I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact these practices can have, particularly for first responders like police officers. The demanding nature of their work often exposes them to high levels of stress, trauma, and emotional strain. Yoga and meditation offer invaluable tools for self-care, resilience, and mental well-being in the face of these challenges. By cultivating mindfulness and inner strength, officers can better navigate the complexities of their profession, enhance their decision-making abilities, and foster healthier relationships with themselves and their communities. Prioritizing the mental and emotional health of our first responders through these practices is essential.

Why practice Ashtanga Flow?

⚡️A great class to rid tension, stagnation and lethargy from the body.
⚡️To allow for feelings of spaciousness in the body and the breath.
⚡️Learning through pranayama (energy extension via breath) to utilise the breath effectively.
⚡️To experience progression in building strength as well as flexibility in the body.
⚡️A great way to energise the body and go about your weekend feeling hella’ fresh and funky.

The core element of these classes is that they are fun, explorative and dynamic, offering up plenty of movement as well as relaxation and meditation toward the end of class.

Influenced by the postures of Ashtanga Yoga’s primary series, exploring a variety of postures from the sun salutations, to the warriors, to invigorating twists to heart openers. Explore balance postures to cultivate a greater level of concentration and body awareness. A class suitable for all levels with modifications of postures offered.

Ashtanga Vinyasa’s philosophical principles form the basis of each and every class with focus on Ashtanga Vinyasas’ 3 pillars (tristana);

Pranayama (Breath)
Bandhas (Energetic locks)
Dristi (focus/gaze)

Ashtanga Flow encompasses fluid movement interconnected with the breath and offers increased strength, flexibility and mobility in the body. A great practice to invite energy in and to banish lethargy. We always finish with plenty of relaxation and time to wind down and finish with a meditation practice so you leave feeling grounded, centred and ready for your weekend.

Happy body, calm mind.

We start back next Saturday the 20th of Jan and there are a few spaces left of your interested in joining our lovely group.

Classes run for 6 weeks at a cost of €70. If finances are an issue we can figure something out, or please do mention if you are a student or unwaged and we can reduce the cost.

Text/WhatsApp 0851458738 or DM to book a spot. All questions welcome ❤️

Why practice yin?

Physically;
- For improved range of motion and increased flexibility. - Great for gym goers, who might feel tension in the body from weight training, s&c or other activities.
- Beneficial for runners, cyclists who may want to deeply stretch into hamstrings, and muscles around the hip joints, glutes, lower back etc.
- Great for people who work in an environment that requires long periods of sitting as Yin is quite hippy (focus on the hips, how they move, areas of tension etc).
- Yin to supplement your yang style yoga practice (i.e., Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Hatha etc.)

Unlike yang styles of yoga and exercise, Yin has the ability to target deep into the connective tissues, the ligaments & the fascia due to its longer, passive like time spent in postures.

This requires softness, stillness, patience and allows for the practice of Yin to become meditative, contemplative and reflective. A truly therapeutic practice. And thus the mental and restorative benefits are cultivated.

Wednesdays are for Yin ☺️
We practice at 8pm - 9.15pm in Ballygarvan Community Centre, cocooned in candle light, with relaxing music. Come get cosy, there’s a handful of spaces left 💚Booking or questions welcomed via DM or text/whatsapp 0851458738

Lets get pure cosy 💤

Hey Facebook fam! My classes resume on Wednesday week the 17th of Jan at Ballygarvan Community Centre. A little detail on them below.

💤 Y I N Y O G A ;
For those who want to stop, slow down and rest. Yin embodies stillness, softness and offers moments of peace and quiet, reflection and contemplation. Yin is a powerful practice, meditative in nature. All postures are taken from seated or supine (lying down), and are held anywhere from 5-9 minutes in a passive (soft) approach to truly target the muscle, fascia, connective tissue and joint mobility. A realll juicy stretch, you’ll leave feeling taller (so I’ve heard!) It sounds dreamy (and feedback suggests so) however, postures typically produce levels of discomfort and patience is needed on the part of the student, which is a practice in itself which is really powerful when taken off the Yoga mat.
Expect lots of lying down, a dark candle lit room, dreamy choons, a daycent stretch, long savasana’s and a sound nights sleep! A very therapeutic practice. Suitable for everybody, no experience required.

⚡️A S H T A N G A F L O W ;
For those who like to move. Wake up and shake up any stagnant energy in the body. Inspired by Ashtanga Yoga’s primary series but taken in a vinyasa flow style. Explore the sun salutations to open, strengthen and energise the body, standing postures, seated postures, gentle backbends, twists as well as time for adequate rest and meditation. Explore the power of the breath, and practices to utilise your breathing efficiently.
Expect to banish lethargy, energise yourself for the day, fun and at times challenging postures taken with a playful approach. We take nothing too seriously and different variations are given to suit different abilities and bodies. Expect to gain strength, flexibility and mobility while stilling the mental chitter chatter. Not suitable for the absolute beginner, a little yoga experience is required.

Classes are booked in six week blocks for a cost of 70e.
Both classes can be booked for 6 weeks at a cost of 120e if you fancy a mix of Yin and Yang Yoga!
Message to book or if you have any questions whatsoever. You can message me here or via WhatsApp/text on 0851458738 (preferred).

Thanks for reading ❤️

An inversion in Yoga; A posture/pose/shape where the head is below the heart.

In classes, we will always take everything at your pace, to what suits you on any given day. Yoga is all about tuning in, noticing what’s happening in the body and that’s a skill that needs cultivating. It took me years to really tune in and I still have to work on it. ❤️

My favourite part of teaching is seeing people in different shapes and taking different variations of postures, honouring what suits them. This is the true practice of Yoga Asana- letting the body lead the way, tuning in, no forcing.

Classes start back the week 15th of January and run in 6 week blocks at a cost of €70. Prices can be adjusted if needed, we can chat, no worries if it’s a financially tough time.
