The grandmother hypothesis states that women's ability to live beyond their fertility years (menopause) could account for the historic increase in mortality rates of children as grandmothers were able to redirect their energies into supporting in the care of their grandchildren. There is also evidence (refer to Kristen Hawkes and her research team) to suggest that this ability has contributed to the increase in the lifespan of humans as a whole. The most recent work of Kristen Hawkes suggests that helpful grandmothering allowed the spread of humans out of Africa to other parts of the world. (For more, read Inferior by Angela Saini)
