🧬 Biotin Deficiency: Rare but Real
While true biotin deficiency is uncommon, it can occur under certain conditions — such as long-term IV feeding without supplementation, infants on biotin-free formulas, or consuming raw egg whites for an extended time 🍳.
👉 Why raw eggs?
Raw egg whites contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin and blocks its absorption. The good news: cooking destroys avidin!
🚨 Signs of Biotin Deficiency:
Hair loss (alopecia)
Scaly red rash (around eyes, nose, mouth, ge****ls)
Depression, lethargy, or numbness
In severe cases, hallucinations or seizures
Who’s at risk?
People consuming raw egg whites long-term
Pregnant women (higher biotin needs) 🤰
Smokers 🚬
Individuals with liver disease or on anticonvulsants
💡 Fun fact: Even mild deficiency can affect energy metabolism, immunity, and skin health — so don’t skip your biotin-rich foods!
