Dispose of Black Plastic Utensils

In 2018, a scientific publication claimed that products made from black plastic are likely often manufactured from recycled waste from the electronics and household appliance industries. In some cases, the chemical composition of these items matched the profile of substances commonly found in computer and television casings, many of which are treated with flame retardants to prevent combustion. According to Turner’s study, the demand for black plastic appears to be met “to a significant degree” by recycled electronic waste.

The problem is that flame retardants in black kitchen utensils can easily migrate into hot frying oil (this was discussed in another 2018 study).

Some flame retardants are endocrine disruptors, meaning they can affect the body’s hormonal system. Scientific literature suggests they may be linked to a range of diseases, including thyroid disorders, diabetes, and cancer. According to a study published this year, people with the highest levels of PBDEs (a class of flame retardants found in black plastic) in their blood had about a 300% higher risk of dying from cancer compared to those with the lowest levels.

In a separate recent study, researchers from Toxic-Free Future and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam found that among all the consumer products they tested, kitchen utensils had some of the highest levels of flame retardants.

Conclusion: As a precaution, it is recommended to dispose of kitchen utensils made from black plastic and replace them with safer alternatives such as metal, wood, or silicone.
