Halloween Creativity at The Clayton Hotel Liffey Valley!

Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting a Halloween Wreath-Making Workshop at the Clayton Hotel Liffey Valley. A local company had booked one of the hotel’s meeting rooms for their team day, and the Clayton team invited me to come in and run a fun, hands-on creative session. Thanks to Rasa McMahon for putting CWS in contact with me and thanks to Marta Smullen for organising the event .

The results were amazing — everyone’s Halloween wreath designs were unique, spooky, and full of personality!

Today I would like to talk about the use of massage guns versus manual therapy with a qualified manual therapist
Massage guns (percussive devices):

🎯A 2023 systematic review found massage guns can improve short-term flexibility, range of motion, and reduce stiffness after fatigue protocols—but they do not improve strength, balance, or explosive performance, and may even reduce them in in some cases .

🎯Separate literature reviews report increased ROM (e.g. hamstrings, calves) and reduced DOMS, but evidence remains limited and often lacks long-term follow-up .
Manual therapy (techniques by PTs, osteopaths, chiropractors):

🎯A trial comparing manual therapy vs. exercise for shoulder impingement showed greater pain reduction in the manual therapy group

🎯In knee osteoarthritis, manual joint mobilization outperformed TENS and cold packs in reducing pain and improving function

🎯A broader systematic review found manual therapy (mobilization, manipulation) offers superior short-term and medium-term outcomes for conditions like epicondylitis, cervicogenic headache, and musculoskeletal pain .

Another successful seminar with SuperValu and Musgrave .We had a look at Posture every day habits that can lead to musculoskeletal dysfunction that can lead to the common dysfunction of forward shoulder and head posture .
We learned how to do a postural assessment on each other ,foot arches ,footwear and some targeted specific muscle exercises for both stretching and strengthening muscles that become short and tight and muscles that become weak .

Today let’s talk about about a topic that a lot of people are not aware of and that is the importance of our lymphatic system.
When we get sore backs,knees,necks and hips we are quick to book an appointment to go see a physical therapist but for a lot of us our lymphatic system is somewhat ignored.
So what is the lymphatic system ?
The lymphatic system is our body’s ‘sewerage system’. It maintains fluid levels in our body tissues by removing all fluids that leak out of our blood vessels.
The lymphatic system is important for the optimal functioning of our general and specific immune responses.
For many of us our lymphatic system is clogged up how you will know this is the case if you are experiencing any of the symptoms below :

Symptoms of lymphoedema
🎯an aching, heavy feeling.
🎯difficulty with movement.
🎯repeated skin infections.
🎯developing hard, tight or thickened skin.
🎯folds developing in the skin.
🎯wart-like growths developing on the skin.
🎯fluid leaking through the skin.
Unlike the heart which has a pump mechanism the lymphatic system is much slower.Because there is no pump there is only a few ways to move lymph
🎯Exercise can help move lymph
🎯Regular visits to a lymphatic Drainage therapist can preform lymphatic drainage
🎯Diet-a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods and adequate protein can be beneficial. This includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Focusing on whole, unprocessed foods and limiting processed foods, sugar, and sodium can also help manage symptoms
🎯Hydration-2-2.5 Litres per day
