- Visit or call an older friend, neighbour, or relative.
- Deliver a meal, run an errand, or simply make time for a chat.

Today is the United Nations International Day of Older Persons — and this year's theme is“Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, and Our Rights.”

In Ireland, older people are an increasingly large part of our society. Nearly 1 in 6 people are now aged 65 or over. Over the last ten years, that age group has grown by more than 36%.

We’re living longer, and healthier lives — life expectancy at birth is about 82.6 years, and at age 65, Irish people enjoy 11.6 years in good health on average, well above the EU average.

At the same time, the over-85 population is projected to almost quadruple by 2057, and the number of older people relative to working-age adults is set to increase significantly.

This makes it more important than ever to listen to the aspirations of older persons, ensure their rights and well-being are protected, and work together in our communities to make Ireland a place for all ages.

This also ties into our view of homecare. We believe that homecare is more than just support, it's about helping people of all ages and abilities to live life to the fullest, whether you are staying in or going out. we launched a campaign to "Rethink HomeCare" earlier this year to expand our services to address the needs of Ireland's older population and their lifestyle.

Let’s raise awareness and celebrate the contribution older people make, today and every day.

It's Positive Ageing Week!

Dublin Zoo and Age Action have partnered for Positive Ageing Week 2025, which runs from Friday, 26th September to Friday October 3rd, with a celebration that honours the resilience, experience, and invaluable role of older generations in society.

The theme for this year, Wisdom of the Herd: Connecting Generations, draws inspiration from elephants, whose herds are guided by their matriarchs, relying on their knowledge, memory, and leadership.

To mark Positive Ageing Week 2025, Dublin Zoo is inviting all guests aged 65 and over to enjoy free entry to Dublin Zoo from 26th September to 3rd of October 2025*.
*One free adult per booking when a full-priced single child or adult ticket is purchased at the gate only. Promoting from Within
We are committed to recognising talent within our team and creating pathways for growth — and Cherie Mbanefo is a shining example of that.
Cherie first joined Private HomeCare in 2022 as a carer, supporting clients in the community with warmth and professionalism. Her passion for care and her attention to detail quickly stood out, and in June 2025, she took on a
dual role supporting both our Training Department and Office Administration.
In the office, Cherie plays an essential role in our daily operations — from managing clock-in records to tracking carer timesheets. On the training side, she works closely with Kellie and Hazel to ensure our carer training runs smoothly,
handling everything from booking attendees to helping set up the training centre for sessions.
Cherie brings not only practical experience, but also a strong academic background, holding a Master’s degree in Social Rights and Social Policy and an undergraduate degree in Law and Criminology.
Outside of work, Cherie enjoys a variety of creative hobbies — crochet, embroidery, sewing, and international baking (which she describes as “a cheaper way to travel!”). She’s also an avid language learner and loves to swim.
We’re proud to have Cherie as part of our growing team and to witness her career progression.
Patsy Philpott, our Senior Recruitment and Compliance Manager, says “we always advertise our internal posts to all staff. We like to recruit from within because the person has a track record with us so we can check if they are reliable and punctual. It is beneficial for us when the candidate knows both sides of the business.”

Cherie echoes this by saying “my experience working with clients and other carers within the community has helped me in gaining a nuanced perspective on homecare which allows me to preform even better in my dual role as I am able
to firmly understand the needs of all informed parties.”
A number of our office and community staff have been recruited from our carer staff, including Lynne and Lidya in our Client team, as well as Therese and Mary in our Community team.

This year’s campaign focuses on parents, guardians, and all responsible adults – because keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility.

Why Ireland Needs a ‘Respect for the Aged Day’

In Japan, Respect for the Aged Day has been a national holiday since 1966—honouring older generations with policies that make daily life safer, easier, and more connected. 🧓💛

Examples include:
🚗 Driver awareness stickers for 75+
🪑 Priority seating & queues
🛗 Barrier-free design in public spaces
🛒 Special shopping hours
👩‍🎓 Intergenerational housing
🤝 Community check-ins

These thoughtful actions reflect Japan’s deep respect for elders—values Ireland already shares through strong family and community bonds.

With our ageing population, a public holiday here could:
✨ Raise awareness
✨ Strengthen intergenerational unity
✨ Encourage communities & businesses to prioritise older people’s dignity and well-being

At Private HomeCare, our mission since 1989 has been: “We care for others as we would like to be cared for ourselves.” 💙

Every day, we can all:
✔️ Empower independence
✔️ Encourage social connection
✔️ Listen & learn from elder stories
✔️ Support families navigating care

Join Private HomeCare in supporting a national holday for older people in Ireland!
