The comments made by Joe Cooney on behalf of Oireachtas members are disappointing, they are not reflective of the urgent needs and wants of the people of the Midwest who have campaigned in their tens of thousands for decent hospital provision.
The people have waited 17 years for promises which were made in 2009 to be honoured. This delay has been at a huge cost to our health & wellbeing.
Joe Cooney spoke about having plans for โOption 2โ (presume he means option b) in the next couple of years. That is not acceptable. We need immediate action, not another cycle of delays. He went further and suggested that he hopes โOption 3โ (option c) might still be considered after Option 2 is delivered and running. This is completely out of touch with the scale and urgency of the crisis.
All three options must be prioritised now, not sequentially, and not at some undefined point in the future. We waited 18 months for the HIQA report. We cannot and will not wait any longer.
Another deeply troubling aspect is that County Clare was not mentioned at all in the recent discussions and documentation. Clare has endured 17 years of delays, dangerous transfer times, and the highest dependency on UHL, yet its name is absent.
It is reasonable to ask whether the Clare Oireachtas members who signed the document noticed this omission and if so, why it was allowed to stand.
The entire process and level of engagement raises questions about how seriously they are engaging with these issues. There has been no public consultation and a visible lack of inclusivity.
The absence of concerns about Clare
raises questions about how seriously they are engaging with these issues. If they did notice but signed anyway, it raises even bigger concerns about priorities and advocacy. Either scenario is unacceptable.
The people of Clare, have been clear, we need a functioning, safe, fair health service now. Our representatives must reflect that urgency, not dilute it or defer it. We expect full transparency, full inclusion, and full commitment to all three options being advanced immediately.
The time for half-measures and vague promises is long over.
