How to approach someone you feel is struggling:
1. Consider the time and place to maximise privacy
2. Start by expressing concern and desire to help
3. Then ask directly if they have thought about su***de. Don't avoid the word.
4. If they don't feel comfortable talking to you, help to identify someone who they may talk to, like a therapist or doctor.
5. Stay calm if they say Yes
6. Do not invalidate their feelings by saying "You have so much going for you". Instead consider saying
“What you’re feeling sounds really painful and difficult. I don’t have all the answers, but I am here to listen.”
“I’m so glad you told me this. Let’s keep talking.”
“I understand you are really struggling, and I am here to listen.”
7. Tell them you want to connect them to the help they need
8. Do not promise to keep it secret. You cant if they are at risk of harm.
9. If they are unsafe, call emergency services or drive them to A&E. Stay with them until they get help.
10. Seek your own support also.
