This is what I've been up to these last 3 years... working towards qualifying as a Acupuncturist & Chinese Medicine Practitioner.

I am so proud of having achieving my goal, and I endeavour to help people feel better utilising this holistic medicine.

It's been a tough journey to get here,
I gave the course 100% and then some! !

Massive thanks to my family & friends for helping me every step of the way and coming to the Training Clinic in Dublin to help me achieve my goal! I couldn't have done it without you!

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting extremely fine pre-sterlised, one-use stainless steel needles into specific points on the body, known as acupuncture points, to stimulate healing and restore internal health.

This practice is based on the ancient theory that 'energy' flows through pathways in the body, and disruptions in this flow can lead to illness or pain.

Acupuncture is often used to relieve pain, reduce stress, and treat a variety of health conditions, including migraines, arthritis, and digestive issues, among many more.

Acupuncture has stood the test of time and has consistently proven its effectiveness. In the hand of a fully qualified practitioner the use of acupuncture is entirely safe and free from harmful side effects.

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

TCM is over 2500 years old, it is a supremely preventative medicine with a sophisticated theory.
It balances the body’s energy, “Qì” (pronounced - chee) based on the laws of nature, to maintain health and treat illness.

Hi! My name is Karen Byrne, and I am thrilled to share that I am a proud 2024 graduate of the Irish College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ICTCM). I have been awarded the prestigious “Licentiate in Traditional Chinese Medicine” qualification.
This Licentiate is recognized by the Professional Register of Traditional Chinese Medicine (PRTCM), the pioneering regulatory body for Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Ireland. As a member of PRTCM, I am also recognized by major health insurance providers in Ireland, including VHI Healthcare, Laya Healthcare, and Irish Life Health.

My TCM Clinic
At my clinic, in Knocktopher (via Hugginstown), Co. Kilkenny, I approach healing with a deep respect and adherence to the ancient wisdom of TCM. I have been taught to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms, and I am dedicated to creating personalised treatment plans that address each patient’s unique needs.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my practice is witnessing the positive transformations in my clients’ lives. One such client, that comes to mind, initially visited me at the Teaching Clinic, in Dublin, with debilitating chronic migraines and now continues their treatment at my own clinic. Through a series of acupuncture sessions and lifestyle adjustments, my client has found significant relief and regained their quality of life. Stories like these continue to fuel my passion and dedication to this ancient art of healing.

My Journey
In 2018, my life took an unexpected turn when my family and I were involved in a car accident. Our stationary car was hit from behind, propelling us into another car in front! Shortly after, I began suffering from debilitating lower back pain.
To manage the pain, I tried everything: rest and medications prescribed by my GP, sessions with Physiotherapists and Chiropractors, and various natural supplements and vitamins. While these treatments provided varying levels of relief, it was my visit to an Acupuncturist that truly opened my eyes to the world of holistic healing through Chinese Medicine. This experience ignited a passion within me to learn more about Traditional Chinese Medicine and ultimately changed the course of my life.

My TCM Education
In 2021, I decided to pursue formal education at the ICTCM, Dublin. I had the privilege of training under Professor Thomas Shanahan, the esteemed founder and director of the college, who brought TCM to Ireland in 1983 and attracts patients from around the world seeking his treatment. Additionally, I was fortunate to learn from other highly knowledgeable ICTCM faculty members appointed by Professor Shanahan, who brought a wealth of expertise to my education.
My studies included extensive coursework in TCM theory, Acupuncture point location, anatomy theory, practical Acupuncture needling & application, Cupping, Moxibustion, as well as third-year projects on both Western and Chinese Medicine.
Additionally, I completed six months of intensive clinical training in the ICTCM Teaching Clinic during my final year. This comprehensive education provided me with a solid foundation to offer holistic care as a working TCM Practitioner.
