I don’t know about you, but for me Christmas was a real mix — hectic (and exhausting) days of preparation, followed by days that were the complete opposite.
Long walks, fresh air, saunas & lake swims, books, films, hanging out with family, playing games, having a lot of laughs.
Over the two weeks, I reckon I got on my mat about five times. And honestly — it was perfect.
It’s interesting how conditioned we are by seasons and markers in the year. Now that it’s January, I can feel that familiar pull back towards routine. I want to feel disciplined again, organised in my head and my body. I’m full of ideas — and I know from experience I need to rein myself in a little.
That’s what practice does for me.
It gives me perspective.
It slows the impulse to rush towards the next thing without pausing to breathe and actually listen.
I’m heading off next week on a short personal retreat — a bit of a buffer before I head into a very busy first half of the year. I’ll be at Jampa Ling, a Buddhist retreat centre in Cavan, giving myself the space to re-establish my own rhythm without distraction.
While I’m there, I’ll also be preparing for the term ahead — classes, courses, and especially the 100-hour Anusara Yoga Immersion. Desk work isn’t my strong suit, but it’s part of my dharma as a teacher and business owner so I do it and then feel so much more at ease.
When I return, we begin again on January 20th in Dromahair and have two new day time courses starting that week too . I’m looking forward to stepping back into teaching with more space around me — refreshed, reoriented, and ready for action.
For fellow yoga teachers especially: taking time out to practice, prepare, and refocus isn’t a luxury. It’s essential. It brings clarity to your teaching, steadiness to your practice, and perspective to how you run your business.
Sometimes the most useful reset is simply switching things off — and then back on again! I know it is not always possible for all kinds of reasons, but even a day away will help you cross the threshold from this to that with more clarity.
