ITM has raised the critical need for targeted investment for Travellers and ring-fenced resources in mainstream initiatives, with Ministers in preparation for Budget 2024.

Poverty alleviation for Traveller children, especially in view of the Child Poverty and Well-being Programme Plan underway within the Taoiseach’s department, is a positive development, but assurances for Traveller children need to be visible and targeted.

We continue to raise the absence of Traveller data in the long-term benchmarking Survey on Income and Living Conditions SILC, and in view of the ESRI's recent reporting of poverty risks, Travellers are most at risk based on those.

For the first time we have evidence of Traveller accommodation planning nationally, which shows from 2016-2023, 297 Traveller projects were planned with 207 still at Planning Stage. Just 44 new units of Traveller accommodation were built by councils nationally from 2019-2021 , compared with 6,499 new units of other housing delivered by them.
