We were delighted to brief Ambassador Fergal Mythen on our project “Hidden in Plain Sight” and speak about the work we have been doing on human trafficking. We spoke about what can be done in international collaboration and policy and shared our hope for the project outcomes. We also met with the team from the mission, Fiona and Caoimhe who spoke about their work on human rights in the UN and ways to collaborate and share our experiences. Thank you Fergal for giving your time this afternoon and for full engaging discussion on this critical issue.

Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the remarkable women of Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, women who lead with courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to creating a better world.

Across our clubs and communities, Soroptimists are taking action: supporting women and girls, advocating for equality, and empowering those whose voices too often go unheard. Each project, partnership, and act of service reflects the strength of women working together for lasting change.

Today we also honour the incredible women and girls we serve: the survivors, leaders, students, carers, entrepreneurs, and dreamers who inspire us every day. Your resilience and determination remind us why this work matters.

Together, we are building a future where every woman and girl has the opportunity to live safely, learn freely, and achieve her full potential.

Happy International Women’s Day from Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland.

Congratulations to Milly Seaman from Bandon, who was crowned winner of the Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland National Public Speaking Competition at the historic Mansion House in Dublin.

Milly impressed judges and audience alike with her confident delivery, clarity of thought and powerful speaking ability. As part of the competition, finalists also responded to an impromptu topic, this year’s challenge was “Growing up means…” where Milly demonstrated remarkable composure and insight.

We are incredibly proud of all the talented students who took part in this inspiring national final, representing their schools and communities with confidence and passion.

Our sincere thanks to SCF Global Campus, whose support helps us continue to encourage young people to develop the skills, confidence and leadership that public speaking fosters.

Today’s the day!

Best of luck to all our incredible finalists travelling to Dublin this morning for the National Final at the Mansion House. We hope the journeys are smooth, the nerves aren’t too bad, and that everyone arrives safe and ready for a fantastic day.

A special thank you to SI Dublin for hosting this year’s final. Dublin has the honour of welcoming the competition because last year’s winner, Sandi from St. Aidan’s Community School, brought the title there in the 44th year of the competition. We’re delighted that Sandi will be joining us today to share what her year as winner has been like and to inspire this year’s finalists.

This moment is the culmination of months of preparation, dedication, and support from teachers, families, and friends across the country. We are so proud of every finalist who has made it to this stage.

And once again, our sincere thanks to SCF Global Campus for their continued support of this programme and for helping empower the voices of young women across Ireland.

Safe travels to everyone and we look forward to an inspiring final at the Mansion House today!

Final preparations are underway in classrooms, homes, and communities across Ireland as our incredible finalists get ready for the National Final this Saturday at the Mansion House in Dublin.

Over the past number of months, these remarkable young women have dedicated time, energy, and courage to developing and sharing their voices. Reaching the national stage is an extraordinary achievement, and we are so proud of every one of them.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the teachers, friends, and families who have supported them along the way. It truly takes a village to nurture confidence, ideas, and ambition and your encouragement has helped bring these finalists to this moment.

This year’s final is especially meaningful as it marks the culmination of the 45th year of the competition. What began four and a half decades ago has continued to grow and flourish, empowering generation after generation of young women across Ireland.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our valued sponsor SCF Global Campus for supporting this programme and helping make opportunities like this possible.

Best of luck to all our finalists, we can’t wait to celebrate with you on Saturday in the Mansion House.

Hidden In Plain Sight - On Thursday, 26th February at 7 pm, Soroptimist International Wexford will host ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’. The FREE information event, held at Wexford Library, will highlight human trafficking in our local communities and allow members of the public to learn more.

Booking is recommended via https://wexfordcoco.libcal.com/event/4508411

We are delighted to be joined at the information event by several speakers, including Professor Niamh Flanagan, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Applied Social Studies at Maynooth University. Professor Flanagan teaches social policy, child and family policy, and responses to child trafficking.

Detective Gda will also join us. Niall Stack and Gda. Karen Coghlan, who were both centrally involved in Ireland’s first successful human trafficking conviction, and a representative from Ruhama.

All our speakers have significant experience with the issues surrounding human trafficking, and we are confident that attendees will find the evening of significant interest.

The final two regional heats of the competition took place over the past two weekends in Castlebar and Cork, marking an exciting milestone in this year’s programme. As with the earlier rounds, the standard was exceptionally high, with participants demonstrating remarkable confidence, preparation, and adaptability to the new competition format.

Judges once again commented on the calibre of talent on display and the professionalism shown by all competitors. The transition to the updated structure has been met with enthusiasm, with participants rising impressively to the challenge.

The competition now enters its final and most anticipated stage. On 7th March, the top eight finalists will gather at the The Mansion House for the National Final. This prestigious venue will host what promises to be an inspiring and closely contested event.

At stake is the perpetual Mildred O’Brien Trophy, alongside a generous cash prize sponsored by SCF Global Campus, the competition’s main sponsor. In addition, the winning finalist will ensure her school receives the Schools Bursary funded by Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, further reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to supporting education and empowering young women.

With the bar set extraordinarily high across all regional heats, the National Final promises to be a showcase of talent, leadership, and ambition. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of these outstanding young women in Dublin this March.

Moving forward are Milly Seaman and Ella Mc Carthy both from Coláiste na Toirbhirte, Bandon and Erin Godswill Clonfert College Ballinasloe and Marissa Divilly St Joseph’s Secondary School, Castlebar!

Today we celebrate St Brigid of Kildare, a woman of strength, compassion and quiet power. A leader, a changemaker, and a champion for justice long before the language existed.

Her legacy of care, courage and community lives on in the work of Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, as Soroptimists across Ireland continue to advocate for women and girls, locally, nationally and globally.

May this day remind us of the power of women coming together with purpose, kindness and conviction.
