The Life You Don’t See: Tara's Reflections

The Life You Don’t See: Tara's Reflections This is the page that for the book I am writing in honour of my Tara. She was more than my assistance dog for epilepsy.

She was my family
I want to present our challenges and achievements in the 11 years we've been together This is the journey of Tara, my incredible assistance dog who changed my life and helped me fight the stigma around epilepsy. Through our bond, I found strength and hope. Follow us as we share stories, break barriers, and honor Tara’s memory.

Walking beside Viorel, I feel a quiet but profound sense of purpose. The crisp air brushes against my fur, and the rhythmic sound of our steps feels like a shared heartbeat. Every stride we take is part of something bigger.

To an onlooker, my role might seem simple. But I know it’s far more than that. I’m here to provide calm when anxiety looms, reassurance when doubts arise, and companionship that helps him face challenges head-on. My presence reminds him he’s not alone, even in the most trying moments. Together, we’re navigating more than physical spaces—we’re taking steps toward a world that feels kinder and more inclusive.

Today, we saw how small adjustments to a footpath could spark meaningful change. It’s a symbol of what happens when someone speaks up and takes action. Alone, neither of us could achieve the same results—but together, we amplify each other’s strength.

"It may not solve every issue we face, but it’s a beginning—a reminder that small actions can grow into meaningful change."

Every step we take matters. Every small victory brings us closer to a more inclusive world. And as I glance up at Viorel, I feel immense pride in being a part of his mission.

Through organisations like 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞, dogs like me 🐕‍🦺 learn to support our owners in ways that go beyond the ordinary. Whether it’s guiding someone through a crowded street, fetching medication, or staying calm during a seizure, we’re trained to meet the unique needs of our humans.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞 𝐃𝐨:
From my perspective as an assistance dog, each of us has a unique mission:

👁️‍🗨️ 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬: We help visually impaired individuals navigate obstacles and move safely through their daily lives.
🔔 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬: We alert our humans to important sounds like doorbells, alarms, or even crying babies.
🦾 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬: We retrieve objects, open doors, and provide balance and physical support.
⚡ 𝐒𝐞𝐢𝐳𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐃𝐨𝐠𝐬: We stay close during seizures, fetch medication, and signal for help when needed.

𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞:

This incredible organisation 🌟 trains and provides assistance dogs for free while creating partnerships that empower both humans and their dogs.

Here’s how they make a difference:

📚 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: From basic obedience to task-specific skills, they prepare dogs for challenges big and small.
💰 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: By covering costs like veterinary care and food, they remove financial barriers for owners.
🤝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠: They foster inclusion, creating a space where trainers, owners, and dogs work together for a shared purpose.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐈𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬:
Viorel’s decision to train me as an assistance dog 🐾 changed both our lives. Together, we’ve built a partnership based on trust, resilience, and shared growth. Every small success—like navigating a tricky market or helping a lonely dog at the park—is a step toward a world where assistance dogs are recognised and respected.

𝐀 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭:
For dogs like me, it’s not just about training or commands—it’s about breaking barriers 🌍 and creating a more inclusive world for our humans. Through the work of organisations like 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞, we’re proving that every wag 🐕, every step 🚶‍♂️, and every task completed makes a difference.

I stayed close as his steps slowed, watching him carefully. Then came the signs of an aura—the moment he feels the world start to shift before a seizure takes hold. The once-clear path blurred, the objects around us fading into vague shapes.

When the seizure began, my training told me to stay calm, to be steady, to do what I’ve been prepared for. But my heart broke as I watched him go through it. His body stiffened, his limbs je**ed, and though it lasted less than a minute, it felt like an eternity.

When it passed, I nuzzled his hand gently, letting him know I was there. In that moment, I understood the weight of my role more deeply than ever before.

For you, it might just be a high kerb—an extra effort to lift your leg a little higher. But for someone in a wheelchair, a parent with a pram, or an elderly neighbour, it’s not just an inconvenience. It’s a barrier, one that can endanger them or keep them from living their lives fully.
I watched as Viorel’s steps grew more deliberate, his grip on the pram tightening. This wasn’t just another walk anymore. It was a decision, a promise to push forward. To advocate, to challenge, to demand better—not just for us, but for everyone who faces these silent, unspoken barriers every day.
Kerbs too high for wheels. Streets that ignore those who need them most. These obstacles shouldn’t exist—not when we’re all part of the same society. Respecting others means creating spaces where everyone belongs.
Viorel doesn’t let obstacles stop him, not when there’s even the smallest chance of making things better. Together, step by step, we are part of the change...

‘Dogs aren’t allowed,’ she said, pointing to the door. Her voice was sharp, her mind closed. Typical. Humans love making things complicated. I wouldn’t fuss if she tried to sit on my bus.”

There it was—a sign staring right back at us: NO DOGS ALLOWED.
Viorel stood firm, showing her my assistance dog ID. “She’s not just a dog,” he said. “She’s here to help me. And my wife is pregnant—walking isn’t safe in this heat.” Andrea rested her hand on her belly, her exhaustion visible beneath her loose dress.

But the ticket seller wouldn’t budge. Her voice grew louder, and the murmurs of the passengers surrounded us like a storm. Viorel took a deep breath, steadying himself before he spoke again:
“You should be ashamed for forcing a pregnant woman off this bus. If you don’t respect assistance dogs, at least respect common sense.”

Still, she didn’t move. And so, we did. The three of us stepped into the relentless heat, the bus pulling away behind us. Forty-five minutes of walking stretched ahead, the sun wrapping around us like a heavy blanket. Viorel’s frustration simmered, but beneath it, I felt something else: a flicker of hope. His pace quickened as we neared his grandfather’s house, a place of comfort and strength.

I stayed by his side, ready to carry both the burden of disappointment and the anticipation of what was to come...

Have you ever felt at home the moment you found ?

After exploring every nook and cranny of my new home, I finally allow myself to rest. I find a soft, inviting spot on the couch, and the warmth of the fabric draws me in. Viorel and Andreea watch with pride, clearly pleased with how quickly I’m settling in. Viorel sits beside me, gently rubbing my ears, and I feel a connection growing stronger with every touch.

As the day winds down, I curl up in my new bed, reflecting on all that’s happened. The scents of the day linger in my nose—the soft leather of Viorel’s shoes, the warmth of the couch, the cool air from the balcony. Everything feels right. I sense that I am where I’m meant to be—by Viorel’s side, watching over him just as he watches over me. I drift off to sleep, knowing this is only the beginning of our journey together...

The first time I met him, I wasn't sure what to expect—but his scent told me everything I needed to know.

I sniff the shoes of the man crouched before me. His scent is new and intriguing, but there’s something else too—something I can’t quite name but feels important. Beneath the warmth, there’s a faint, different note that sets him apart from the few other humans I’ve known. The hay tickles my nose, and I can hear my siblings rustling behind me, but I only have eyes for him. When I look up, I meet his warm brown gaze. He smiles, gently patting my head—a touch that feels like an unspoken promise.

The woman next to him seems softer, quieter, watching me with a mix of curiosity and hope. Her eyes tell a story I don’t yet know. She kneels, extending a cautious hand, her voice as soft as her gaze. “She’s brave,” she murmurs, and I feel a ripple of pride, even if I don’t know exactly what it means.

I don’t know it yet, but I’ve just found my family.

This is Tara, my beautiful German Shepherd with a heart of gold. When she first came into my life, there were no plans or expectations for her to become anything more than a loving companion. She was just a curious, playful pup who filled my days with laughter and joy. But life had a different plan for Tara – an unplanned destiny that would change everything.

Over time, Tara became more than just a pet; she grew into the role of my assistance dog, guiding me through life with epilepsy. It wasn’t through formal training or expectation – it was through her own instincts, loyalty, and love. Tara seemed to know when I needed her most, sensing changes and standing by me through every challenge. She was there to steady me, comfort me, and remind me that I was never alone.

What makes Tara’s story even more special is that she wasn’t born into this role. She chose it. Through her bond with me, she became my protector, my strength, and my guiding light. I know many of you have experienced the incredible ways dogs can sense, love, and care for us beyond words.

I want to honor Tara’s legacy by sharing her story with all of you – because dogs like her have a way of changing our lives in ways we never expect. If you’ve ever had a dog who was more than “just a dog,” who became a part of your soul, I’d love to hear about it. Let’s celebrate their love, loyalty, and the remarkable roles they play in our lives. ❤️🐾

𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐞: 𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐦”🐾✨

Hi everyone! I’m Viorel, and I’d like to warmly welcome you to this page dedicated to honoring Tara, my incredible assistance dog, and sharing our journey together. For over a decade, Tara was my loyal companion, helping me navigate life with epilepsy. She was more than just a dog – she was my lifeline, my strength, and a true hero.

But Tara’s journey wasn’t always that of an assistance dog. She began simply as a loving, playful dog, with no training for this role. It was just her destiny that she would become so much more – a true partner in my fight against epilepsy. Like so many of our beloved pets, she had the innate ability to sense, love, protect, and transform lives. Whether trained for a special purpose or simply bringing joy in small moments, every dog has the potential to change a life.

🐾𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐚’𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐜𝐲: Sharing stories, memories, and moments that show the incredible bond we shared, how she grew into her role, and how she became so much more than I could have imagined.
💜 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Shedding light on living with epilepsy and breaking the stigma around it, with honesty and hope.
📖 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: A space for heartfelt conversations, learning, and connecting with those who’ve experienced the power of an animal companion, whether in service roles or as cherished friends.

I’ve started writing a book as a tribute to Tara’s memory, titled “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐞𝐞: 𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐦” It’s not a polished story written by a professional author, but by a man who lived every moment of it. It’s raw, real, and from the heart.

Whether you’ve followed our journey before or are just discovering it now, I’m so glad you’re here. Let’s honor Tara together and build a space of support, love, and understanding – for dog lovers, disability advocates, and everyone whose life has been touched by a loyal friend.

Thank you for being here. Together, we’ll keep Tara’s memory alive and celebrate the remarkable impact our dogs have on all of us. ❤️
