Karla ONeill Counselling

Karla ONeill Counselling Qualified integrative psychotherapist, pre-accredited member of IACP. In-person and online sessions available. BSc in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Support for depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, stress management, trauma and abuse, grief and loss, neurodivergence, sexuality and gender. Pre-accredited member of the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. Completing a specialist diploma in non-directive play therapy. I have been working with Sosad Navan for the past few years and am running my private practice from my private studio in Navan Town Centre. My lived experience of complex trauma, depression, anxiety and neurodivergence enables me to help others experiencing these difficulties. I don't treat mental health diagnoses. Instead I support each person as they process what has happened to them and discover who they can be when they no longer need unhelpful coping mechanisms.

This week's song is The Song of Good Hope by Glen Hansard. Hansard has been prominent in Irish music for over 35 years with bands The Frames and The Swell Season. This song is from Hansards first solo album, 2012s Rhythm and Repose. The song is slow, simple and gentle. Just soft guitar playing, joined later by soft violin. It has the gentle swing of a soft lullaby. Just how we should be in January, soft, gentle, slow, going with the flow and hopeful. Reaching out for all the help we can get.

This week's song is 'Enjoy Yourself [It's Later Than You Think]' by Carl Sigman and Herb Magidson [1949]. Always featured in Jools Holland's Annual Hottenanny this song offers humour wrapped in truth. Beneath its cheerful swing is a reminder that life moves faster than we think. Arriving in postwar America, it spoke to a world ready for optimism yet aware of time’s fragility.
This song preaches a philosophy I try to consciously live by. The years really do go by as quickly as a wink and in todays culture of busyness and constant noise it can be very hard to take a moment to ask yourself 'Am I really enjoying my life right now?' 'What would I be doing if I stopped worrying about all of the things I can't control?' This message has become all the more poignant with the recent sudden loss of a dear family member. As I reflect on my highlights of 2025 I am glad that I spent as much time as I possibly could with the people and animals I love, peacefully breathing in the nature of some of the most beautiful parts of Ireland, appreciating the privilege it is to grow older and learning all that I can to be a better version of myself. And always enjoying music.
As Ferris Bueller wisely said 'Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.' Happy New Year, enjoy yourself x

I have been looking for a grief support group for a client of mine and I'm shocked to discover there are none currently in Navan. I feel this is a massive gap in support within the community which can make a huge difference to those experiencing grief and loss.

I'm based in Navan shopping centre and have the space to facilitate a small group. I just want to gage if this is something people are interested in. If you or anyone you care about are interested in attending a grief support group can you please contact me. You can PM me here or email me at counselling@karlaoneill.ie

Morning walk with my favourite companion to clear my head while I try to plan my social media content. I haven't been very active here for the few months but that is going to change. Watch this space.....

People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let them be.

When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, “Soften the orange a little on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple along the base, and use a little more pink in the cloud color.”

I don’t do that. I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch it with awe as it unfolds.

Counselling support groups starting in Navan in June. Group counselling brings together individuals who are dealing with similar life challenges—whether related to mental health, physical illness, or major life transitions.

Group counselling can reduce feelings of isolation, foster connection and understanding, and help develop practical tools for daily life. It’s also more affordable than individual counselling and can be just as effective. We heal best when we heal together.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re carrying too much on your own, or wondered if others feel the same way you do—you’re not alone. Group counselling offers a space where your voice is heard, your story matters, and your healing is shared.

I’m currently accepting expressions of interest for my upcoming group sessions. Whether you’re navigating life transitions, burnout, grief, or simply want to connect more deeply with yourself and others—this space is for you.

I’ve always been drawn to the idea of counselling in a group setting. In my one-on-one work with clients, I’ve seen time and time again that many struggles are universal. And when someone feels truly heard—when they trust another with their story and receive empathy in return—it can be a powerful and transformative experience.

Now imagine that experience amplified in a group, where you’re surrounded by others who get it. That’s the beauty and strength of group counselling.

Group counselling is common in countries like the USA, and somewhat accessible in the UK, but it’s still relatively hard to find here in Ireland—which surprises me. The benefits are well-documented, and yet it remains an underused resource.

What does the future of counselling and psychotherapy in Ireland look like? In an ideal world counselling services would be accessible to all from a young age so that problems can be addressed before they reach crisis point. Government investment would be managed cleverly so that everyone can access the help they need, when they need it.
In the full post on my website I look at ways we can make counselling more accessible even without government funding. https://karlaoneill.ie/the-future-of-counselling-and-psychotherapy/

Part 2 of my blog on what is counselling & psychotherapy. This focuses on the difference between counselling and psychotherapy, something I am often asked about but have struggled to understand myself until I took a deep dive into the history books. The answer I found has helped to explain why I have struggled so much to identify as a psychotherapist. Counselling isdefinitely more my style.
