📚 School’s nearly back... which means playground bumps and scrapes are probably back too!
Here’s a quick guide to help you handle minor cuts and grazes confidently when term starts:
✅ If bleeding has stopped:
Wash your hands and pop on gloves if you have them
Rinse the wound with bottled or tap water, or use sterile wipes
Clean the skin around the wound with soap and water or antiseptic (avoid getting antiseptic into the wound)
Pat dry with gauze or a clean tea towel
Cover with a plaster or sterile dressing
🧊 For bumps and bruises:
Use an ice pack (wrapped in a towel or cloth — never directly on skin) within the first 24–48 hours to help reduce swelling and numb pain.
⚠️ Always call 999 or head to A&E if:
You can’t stop the bleeding
Blood is spurting, bright red, and hard to control
You lose feeling or struggle to move the area
There’s a large or deep cut, or something stuck in the wound (like glass)
The injury is on the face or palm
