Motherwort / Leonurus cardiaca
Zooming in on the doctorine of signatures of this beauty in bloom... spikes & softer parts point to protective heart tonic and red dots adding heat element.... straight stem and airy hairs indicate their affinity with the nervous system.
Along with sitting with the plants themselves, reading these signatures where once how we connected to their medicines.
Clinical trials have now continuously shown Motherworts ability to reduce high blood pressure, treat insomnia, support hyperthyroidism, and whole array of gynaecological issues.
Though this doesn't give a clear picture of the many interactions that happen when we use whole plant medicines.
Yes, the symptoms are addressed, but it's happened on a much deeper level, the example with blood pressure alone. In truth, the word modulated is a better fitted, as it's only been reduced by both relaxing blood vessels & capillaries as well strengthing them. Difficult heartfelt emotions that have been held in the body are supported to be brought to the surface and assimilated in a safe way.
The mothering energy of Motherwort is like no other.
Naturally, it's such an important herb for motherhood, from supporting labour contractions to maternal mental health. She is always part of my postnatal tonics (unless contraindicated with hypothyroidism/ low blood pressure etc) for her unique actions on the uterus, expelling damp stagnant tissue states of the womb.
I remember getting a beautiful little Motherwort plant while coming to motherhood almost 6 years ago, and though I had been using Motherwort in clinical practice previously, this was this first time I really connected to her medicine. The way she changes how we perceive the world through our heart, nervous system & gut. I go on for days!
We'll be connecting with Motherwort during the postnatal somatic yoga & mother & baby classes starting the 17th of June eeeek.... a huge thank you to the wonderful women that have already signed up, delighted to be seeing familiar faces again at new stages of motherhood & meeting some new inspiring women.
