The use of saunas has drastically increased over the last few years and for good reason. They’re relaxing, social, alcohol-free, and packed with health benefits:

• Boost cardiovascular function 🫀
• Reduce inflammation & aid recovery 💪
• Improve mood & relieve stress 🧠
• Promote better sleep 😴

But here’s something that’s less talked about: heat and s***m health.

Your te**es naturally sit about 2 °C cooler than your core body temperature — and s***m are very heat-sensitive. Regular or prolonged sauna sessions can temporarily reduce s***m count and quality.

🧊 Smart ways to enjoy saunas without overheating your swimmers:

• Limit time & frequency: shorter sessions or fewer days per week
• Balance with recovery: give your body time to cool down between sauna days
• Cool strategies:
o During sauna: sit on a cold water bottle if comfortable or wear cooling underwear pants if allowed
o After sauna: ice pack or cooling underwear (“Snowball pants”)
• Keep in mind: s***m take 2–3 months to develop, so consistent heat matters. So if you have received a semen analysis results and/or high DNA frag, I would recommend to avoid for 90 days if possible.

This isn’t fear-mongering, it’s about awareness. If you’re planning a family now or in the future, small adjustments can protect your fertility without giving up the sauna lifestyle.

Today, on , we remember all the babies who left too soon.
We hold space for every parent carrying invisible grief.

💬 Things I wish people knew…

There’s no timeline for grief.
There’s no “right” way to heal.
You are allowed to take your time. You are allowed to ask for help.

🕊 In Ireland, after two losses you can ask your GP for a referral to a recurring pregnancy loss unit. But if something feels off, you don’t have to wait — you can start investigations after your first loss or whenever feels right for you.

💛 Thinking of you. I see you. I hold space for you.

📌 Save this for when you need it.
💬 Share it to remind someone they’re not alone.

Did you know that 25–80% of infertile men have elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS)? While our bodies naturally produce ROS, too much leads to oxidative stress—a major factor impacting male fertility.

🔬 Why does it matter?
• 🚫 Reduces s***m motility, vitality, and morphology
• ⏳ Delays natural conception and lowers fertilisation success
• ❌ Increases the risk of miscarriage
• 🧬 Causes s***m DNA fragmentation

Oxidative stress can be measured through specialised tests such as chemiluminescence assays and redox potential testing.
But here’s the key: our bodies thrive on balance. Just as too much ROS is harmful, excessive antioxidant intake can create “reductive stress”, which also disrupts s***m function. This is why, in my clinic, we emphasise the importance of testing before loading up on supplements where applicable to ensure you’re supporting fertility, not unintentionally causing negative damage.

🌿 Antioxidant-rich foods we often recommend in our clinic include:

• Berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries) – rich in vitamin C and polyphenols
• Nuts & seeds (especially walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds) – sources of vitamin E and selenium
• Leafy greens (spinach, kale) – high in folate and antioxidants
• Tomatoes – a great source of lycopene
• Citrus fruits – boosting vitamin C naturally
• Green tea – abundant in catechins that help neutralise free radicals
• Oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) – omega-3s for s***m membrane health

💡 The goal isn’t to overload the body with supplements, but to achieve homeostasis—a state of balance where oxidative and antioxidant systems work in harmony.

👉 Ideally, always test your oxidative stress levels before supplementing and focus on a whole-food, balanced approach to protect s***m health and support fertility.
