Last night on The Tommy Tiernan Show, Luke Loughlin spoke openly about his journey through addiction — from alcohol and gambling to co***ne — and the emotional pain that fuelled it.

He made an important point: addiction doesn’t happen overnight. His mum watched him struggle for years — getting into trouble repeatedly, making harmful choices, and pushing away support before he finally got help. That escalation, and the fear and heartbreak families feel when someone they love is in danger, is all too common.

Luke spoke about how difficult it was for his mother to set boundaries and use tough love — not because she didn’t care, but because she had already seen him hurt himself, Watching someone spiral, getting into, risky situations or self-destructive behaviours, is deeply painful for families — and yet support, connection, and honest help are what finally opened the door to change.

The hardest part is accepting the help.

When I immersed myself in academic research on addiction, two Irish voices consistently stood out to me.i wrote about them many times on my academic journey. In Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences (ICHAS), Maynooth University & University of Limerick.

Ireland has been fortunate to have figures such as Jack Nolan and Eddie Mullins contributing to the national conversation on addiction. Both men, emerging from senior roles within the criminal justice system, have used their influence to articulate a more humane and evidence-informed understanding of substance dependence.

Eddie Mullins, former Governor of Mountjoy Prison and now CEO of Merchants Quay Ireland.

And Jack Nolan, former Assistant Garda Commissioner.

Both men come from systems traditionally associated with crime and punishment. Both have seen addiction at its harshest edges.

Yet what struck me most during my research was not judgment in their language — it was understanding.

As I studied addiction through neurological, psychological, and social lenses — genetics, trauma, co-occurring disorders, brain chemistry — one thing became increasingly clear:

Addiction is not about badness.

It is about illness.

It is about distorted thinking, hijacked survival systems, and often unresolved trauma.

When leaders from within the justice system speak about addiction with compassion, that carries weight.

Because they have seen it firsthand.

And when you truly sit with someone in addiction, you understand — this is not someone thriving.

This is someone profoundly unwell.

Today’s CPD focused on the ethical, legal and professional considerations of clinical note-keeping.

What stood out most is that notes are not just documentation — they are part of client safety, continuity of care and professional accountability.

Clear notes protect the client, the therapeutic relationship, and the therapist.

Grateful to continue learning and deepening my practice.Thank you Anita for a really grounding and practical workshop.

In my psychotherapy practice, I work with many clients who struggle in their workplaces.

Work takes up such a large part of our lives — and when the environment isn’t supportive, trusting, or healthy, the impact goes far beyond the office.

I see how poor leadership cultures affect confidence, mental health, home life, and overall wellbeing. These are capable, thoughtful people ,often great thinkers ,who begin to doubt themselves in environments that don’t value or trust them.

As Simon Sinek highlights here, leadership and culture matter. A healthy workplace doesn’t just improve performance — it protects people.
