With temperatures set to climb this weekend, itโ€™s not just us feeling the heat our horses will too. What feels like a welcome dose of summer can quickly become a welfare concern if not managed carefully

โ€ข๐ŸŒž Ideal for turnout: Mild and sunny perfect for extended paddock time.
โ€ข๐Ÿ’ง Water availability: Ensure horses have access to fresh, cool water all day.
โ€ข๐Ÿงด Sun protection: Consider light sunblock or fly sheets if your horses are fair-skinned or prone to sunburn.
โ€ข๐Ÿงบ Grooming note: With warm weather, horses sweat more, groom regularly to avoid skin irritation.

โ€ข๐Ÿ•’ Adjust turnout times: Avoid midday sun (12โ€“4 pm). Opt for morning or late afternoon turnout.
โ€ข๐ŸงŠ Hydration & cooling: Provide access to shade, salt lick, and plenty of cool water. Misting or hosing after exercise helps cool them safely.
โ€ข๐Ÿšซ Exercise caution: Schedule rides in cooler hours (early morning/evening) and keep sessions light. Avoid intense work in heat stick to walking, hacking, or light schooling.

โ€ขSimilar care as Saturday:
โ€ขMorning or evening turnout and exercise only.
โ€ขMisting and shade are your best friends.
โ€ข๐Ÿงฝ Skin care: Inspect for sunburn or sweat rash, especially under gear and harnesses.

๐–๐ž๐ž๐ค๐ž๐ง๐ ๐‚๐ก๐ž๐œ๐ค๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ:
Shade: Ensure paddocks have shaded areas or portable shelters
Water: Keep multiple water sources filled and shaded
Salt & Electrolytes: Provide salt licks; consider electrolytes after exercise
Cooling Gear Use: hosing, misters, or ice boots post exercise
Timing Plan: turnout and rides in cooler parts of the day
Grooming Increase: grooming frequency to avoid heat related skin issues

This weekendโ€™s heat is more than sunshine, itโ€™s a welfare test. Prioritise early turnout, real shade, cool water, and minimal work. Watch for subtle signs of heat stress. Welfare means staying ahead, not reacting late

โœ… Injury prevention โ€“ identifying and addressing minor issues before they become problems
โœ… Improved range of motion & flexibility โ€“ helping your horse move more freely and comfortably
โœ… Faster recovery after training or events โ€“ reducing muscle tension and soreness
โœ… Enhanced performance โ€“ ensuring your horse feels their best so they can perform at their best

I've already gotten a few questions about laser therapy, so I said I'd put up a little post about what it does and its benefits!

Laser therapy is a safe, scientifically researched treatment that helps to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and support the body's natural healing process. Without going too much into the science of it, it causes a cascade of biological process that dilates the blood vessels, bringing nutrients to the area and flushing out unwanted fluid and waste products.

Laser therapy can be used to help:
๐Ÿ”น Muscle soreness/strains/tears
๐Ÿ”น Ligament and tendon injuries
๐Ÿ”น Wound healing
๐Ÿ”น Inflammation and oedema
๐Ÿ”น Arthritis
๐Ÿ”น Many other acute and chronic conditions for both horses and dogs

Studies have shown laser therapy provides similar anti-inflammatory effects to NSAIDs (like bute), but without the unwanted side effects. It can also work very well in conjunction with other therapies such as HA or PRP injections.

You may have heard about different laser classes, like Class 3B or Class 4. Class 4 lasers deliver the same amount of energy, just faster (not necessarily better!). What matters most is how the laser is used and how the treatment is tailored to each animal's needs.

If you'd like to learn more about laser therapy and if it can help your horse or dog, feel free to get in touch - I'm always happy to have a chat!

Hi everyone! My name is Iola Kawala and I'm excited to finally launch my business page and introduce myself!

Growing up in the Midlands, I was lucky to start riding at an early age and have always passionate about animal health and performance. My official journey into the equine industry started in 2012 when I began studying Equine Science from the University of Limerick, and this year I proudly completed my Diploma in Animal Physiotherapy from The College of Animal Physiotherapy. In between, I spent many years working on thoroughbred stud farms throughout Ireland.

While my main focus is on equine physiotherapy, I also offer rehabilitation and physiotherapy support for dogs, especially those recovering from surgery or injury.

My services include:
โœ” Manual therapies including massage and mobilisations
โœ” Myofascial release
โœ” Rehabilitation plans and guidance
โœ” SpectraVet Therapeutic 3B Laser
โœ” Longwave Ultrasound
โœ” Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)
โœ” Kinesiology Taping

Whether it's to help maintain your horses performance and avoid injuries, recovering from hard training or injury, or your horse just deserves a wellness session, I'm here to help! The same goes for our four-legged canine companions, who can also greatly benefit from a physiotherapy session.

๐Ÿ“ Based in the Midlands and covering surrounding areas.

Get in touch via Messenger or text/WhatsApp 086 127 1819 to find out more.

Thanks so much for following, I'd love if you could share this page with anyone who might be interested in supporting their animal's comfort and recovery.
