The view from The Falls Hotel in Ennistymon, Co.Clare, where I’ve just spent 4 intensive days studying and practicing the art and science of Visionary Craniosacral Therapy. A beautiful reminder that the deepest of healing can come from the gentlest of touch. As a physiotherapist it was a challenge for me to learn this way of deeply listening to the subtle patterns of tension and trauma held in the body but was so worth the hundreds of hours of practice. It completely changed my approach to my practice, my understanding and reverence for the deep intelligence of these bodies we live in and changed my own nervous system from someone who was always rushing around, filling every minute of my day with busyness, into someone who values slowness, spaciousness and depth. For anyone who feels frustrated that their body has not responded to the medical / bio mechanical model of healthcare, perhaps what is needed is a model that takes into account your nervous system all that it has accumulated over the course of your life. I’m so grateful for this modality and all the pioneers that have developed it over the last 100 years.

Hard to believe but this beauty passed away yesterday morning. Sinéad O’Connor .writes.life was a gorgeous person, inside and out. She followed her heart, was fun and vibrant , wrote a book ( a humming bird’s heart), sang and played piano , danced, taught yoga and meditation, was a beautiful friend. She had style and a sense of adventure. She will be missed but her smile and her spirit will live on in the hearts of many. Fly free Sinéad, you were one of a kind 💕💕💕🙏

Processing feelings, building capacity, taking back more agency, these are all part of what you’ll learn at my Feminine Nervous System Retreat, Wicklow March 23-26. Booking closes TODAY at midnight. Even if you don’t register it, the thought of doing something is overwhelming to your nervous system and so your body is protecting you from those feelings by putting that thing way down the road where you can deal with it later.

First of all: it’s helpful to know:: you are not a bad person, your body is having an intelligent response based on past experiences.

Second: as we work to gradually heal our nervous system, the baseline level of stress in the body goes down so it takes more to stress/overwhelm our system

Third: when you have built capacity you can begin to allow yourself to feel the feelings that come up in relation to the thing you are not doing, and deal with the feelings first. Then the thing becomes easier to do.

Au contraire: a healthy nervous system allows us to feel the full spectrum of human emotion. But the difference is that we can feel it, move it through our system and not hang onto it, as emotional baggage. We need to process it at the level of our body and release it. Think of a small child who feels their feelings fully, expresses it fully and then 5 minutes later is completely fine. This is an inbuilt mechanism in humans but we learn early on to suppress our emotions and live at the mental level. All of that emotional energy gets stuck in the tissues and eventually manifests as physical problems, or anxiety, even depression.
One of the biggest themes of my nervous system retreat in May is how do we learn how to process our lives through our bodies so that we are not carrying the imprints of stress forwards with us as we age. In my opinion this is the biggest reason why people age the way they do: the accumulation of the undigested stress of life creates tension in the tissues, as well as the toll taken on every single system in the body by chronically elevated cortisol.
