I wish I was joking, but unfortunately I am not… 🐄 there’s more research on mastitis in cows than in women!!!

Why? Because breastfeeding doesn’t generate profit — but formula feeding does. That means research, funding, and public services are often skewed, leaving many families without the support they truly need.

The reality is, breastfeeding challenges like mastitis are very real, and the lack of accessible help can make the difference between continuing or stopping altogether.

That’s where I come in. As an IBCLC in private practice, I help bridge this gap — offering the care, reassurance, and guidance that every breastfeeding parent deserves.

Another baby born under the HSE homebirth scheme ❤️
Births can be challenging and many time things don’t go exactly how they were planned 😅 but when parents are empowered to make choices and feel supported in their choices, their birth experience will always be a positive one. Congratulations to the most wonderful new parents and their gorgeous little (not so little😅) baby❤️

Today I say goodbye 😢 to this beautiful family🧑‍🧑‍🧒
For their first baby they chose to seek the care of the HSE HOMEBIRTH SERVICE alongside the care in their local hospital. I provided all their antental appointments at home, but due to health situations that arose in late pregnancy, baby was born in hospital. However, not many parents know that even if the baby needs to be born in hospital, if you are under the care of a Homebirth Midwife, you still receive 2WEEKS of postnatal care at home! This mum and baby came home as soon as possible and I did all their care for 2 weeks. Breastfeeding is going amazingly well and mum is recovering very well. All mums should have this service! It makes a huge difference at so many levels❤️

Me and this family are anxiously waiting the arrival of this little one 🤗 Baby is the perfect size and is in the perfect position for birth. When your homebirth midwife visits she does all the checks including urine, blood pressure, uterus measurement and listening to the heartbeat. Today I met with the parents, did the regular checks and talked about hypnobirthing, yoga, nutrition, breastfeeding and practical preparations for birth. All going well this little one will arrive hearthside on a dimly lit birthing pool, surrounded by love❤️
Have you already imagined what your perfect birth would look like? Maybe you’re dreaming of a homebirth💫

Day 3: when everything changes 💛

Those first few days after birth are such a whirlwind. On day 3, your body goes through a huge change — the golden, honey-like colostrum begins to flow more freely, turning into milk. Your breasts suddenly feel fuller and heavier. While it’s reassuring to know your body is making milk for your baby, the discomfort can make this tender time even more challenging.

And it’s not just physical. As milk-making hormone prolactin rises, progesterone and oestrogen suddenly drop. Many mums feel weepy, fragile, or overwhelmed — hello, “baby blues.” 💧

Day 3 is also when many families leave the hospital. Coming home should feel joyful, but it can also feel like stepping onto an emotional rollercoaster 🎢.

If you’re reading this and remembering your own day 3… know that you’re not alone. 💕
And if you’re approaching it soon, know that everything you’re feeling is real, valid, and temporary. 🌿

✨ How was your Day 3? Share your story below — your words may be just what another mum needs to hear.

✨ Breastfeeding Twins – Double the Love, Double the Rewards ✨

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to breastfeed twins! 💕 Not only is it doable, it can be one of the most beautiful and rewarding experiences — creating a special bond between you and each baby, and between the twins themselves. 🤱🤱

Of course, breastfeeding twins can come with extra challenges… but with the right knowledge, strategies, and support, it becomes much smoother and far more enjoyable for everyone. 💪

🌟 If you’re still pregnant – now is the perfect time to get prepared! Book into my breastfeeding class to learn practical tips and build your confidence before your little ones arrive.
🌟 If your twins are already here – I offer one-to-one breastfeeding support appointments to guide you through positioning, feeding schedules, and overcoming any hurdles.

I was truly shocked and saddened to hear that Private Midwives has ceased providing services in Ireland and the UK. 💔

For so many families, they offered something invaluable — access to homebirth care for those who didn’t meet the strict criteria for the HSE homebirth scheme, and the ability to make their own choices about birth. They supported families in every corner of Ireland, making safe, personalised care possible.

If you or someone you know has been affected by this sudden closure, please reach out to me — I will do my best to support you in any way I can.

Homebirth matters. Birth choices matter.
We must continue to protect and fight for both. ✊✨

This week, in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, I was invited to feature on a professional blog.
Here’s a little snippet of my interview 🤩

🎤What’s your favourite thing about your job?
💁🏻‍♀️ This is a hard one because I could write a whole book about this… But one of my favourite things is the satisfaction I get when I can successfully help a family to breastfeed. Most of the time I am contacted by parents that are struggling severely with feeding their baby. They have usually been to the GP, PHN and by the time they get to me, a paid service, things are quite bad. I do a very thorough assessment of Mum, baby and the feeding process and can usually pick up quickly where the issue lies and how we can improve it. Sometimes it can be solved immediately, and there’s tears of happiness, other times it takes a few days. But getting that email or text to say that things are so much better now and how thankful and happy they are is just the most amazing feeling.

😎How to Master the Kid-Free Mum on Holidays Look 👠 💅
A couple of times during the summer holidays I try to have so ME TIME with the girls, and I swear peiple know just by looking at me I’m an ESCAPEE MUM😂😂😂

✨ Clothes WITHOUT food stains
✨ A SMALL bag (because you’re not carrying 3 water bottles, 5 snacks, wipes, and a random toy)
✨ High heels—yes, actual heels—because you’re not chasing anyone around a playground
✨ A huge, radiant smile… because this mama needed this break
✨ One hand always ready to grab the phone—because let’s be honest, being a mum is 24/7 until the end of times!!!❤️
Am I forgetting something??
Whats your favourite part of your look when you’re kid-free???

Tag a mama who needs a break (and a pair of heels 👠)!

A little something about me...

My name is Anabela Almeida. Born and raised in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, from a very young age I felt the calling of helping others. In 2006 I completed my Nursing Degree and started working in a general hospital in Lisbon.

In 2007 love brought me to Ireland and I began working as a nurse in St Luke’s General Hospital. I loved my job, but after having my first baby I fell in love with “mummies and babies world” and decided to do a Higher Diploma in Midwifery.

Working in a maternity hospital is a beautiful and enriching experience. As the proud mother of 4 children, all I’ve learned from the books merged with what I learned from real life.

In 2013 I trained with the International Association of Infant Massage and qualified as a CIMI (Certified Infant Massage Instructor), and have taught more than 200 families the gift baby massage.
