Have we LOST the Art of being Silent ? Enjoying the pauses in between the talking, the noise?

As Yoga teachers, we are here to offer a safe place to for our students to land on their Mat. To move. To breathe. To notice their body relaxing into a more easeful state.

Or is that just my impression?

I recently went to an evening class at a popular studio locally.
It was a vinyasa class. The teacher spoke with a beautiful Mediterranean accent….. The air con unit was noisy in the background…. And the hindu songs were flowing from the music system.

The overwhelm was real for me! I couldn’t hear the teacher properly, thankfully she demonstrated well. By the time we got to Savasana I was breathing a sigh of relief.
After class I sat in my car in silence and breathed my way back to feeling calm in my body once again.

Please use discernment , we trained to enrich the lives of those who share space with us.

A few points for reflection:

1️⃣ the 5 senses need to feel safe in order for students to come into that peaceful, fluid state of breath followed by posture. To enjoy the easeful repetition before coming to rest at end of class ( gentle music at this point might be nice !)

2️⃣ as teachers we can demonstrate how the pause between breath and movement offers mind-body connection. IN fact, we can talk about it if not being drowned out by other competing noise.

3️⃣ always remember, less is more. The body moves to the rhythm of the breath, makes its own music.

Remove distractions. Learn to live with silence. Yoga is moving meditation, don’t drown out this possibility to soothe and calm the body systems. Our nervous system, mental health and physical body need to feel safe.

Thankfully, it’s not a step ladder effect.
It’s more a perspective on how we can shape and create our lives.

We can be working on stability and purpose whilst considering our boundaries and self esteem. We can be working on relationships whilst discovering our life purpose.
Be curious, be kind and allow the insights drop in to your heart and mind.

Widen your circle and ask for support where you need it.
Look out for people and systems that light you up.

Take good care of your mind and body and how you use your energy daily. 💞🔥

And when you’ve done the movement- learn how to sit with yourself. and so on …..

Prioritise your physical health and needs to support your mental health.

It’s a fact of living in 2025. We deal with a LOT daily. Distractions, worklife, childcare, relationships, study - with little energy or space to take on more. Thus, life gets busy and overwhelming sometimes.

When we spiral into that place of not coping well with what life is currently offering, we tend to forget our basic needs:
sleep pattern goes out the window, eating junk/comfort foods, spending hours looking at others perfect virtual lives - sadly Social media is such a misrepresentation of real life! Even when all appears perfect.

The truth is, when your mind is struggling, you need to find safety in your body. In the physical here and now:

💦 drink water stay hydrated

😴 keep a regular sleep routine - our brains need time to process emotions / body to heal and replenish - 7-9 hrs

🥗 keep regular mealtimes - helps to balance out blood sugar / brain-gut axis for emotional regulation

🌳 move your body / walk outdoors

🌬️ breath awareness and mindfulness - slowing down the breath - try Box breath or 4-7-8 breathing technique. Both simple and so effective to soothe the nervous system / calm the mind. (Google these if not familiar)

🥇prioritise you and your time. Don’t take on any more right now.

Small steps to move forward slowly and gently.

The answer is not a clear “do this or do that”. It’s such a personal journey for each one of us.

Sometimes life changes and circumstances push us out of old patterns and into a new reality.

Seeking out a professional to help you pivot out of blocks or stuck patterns can help shine a light on those areas that just don’t fit anymore.

The space you’re in now - today - is sacred. So listen to what your heart is telling you when you go quiet and ask these questions:
What do you love in your life?
What would you love to change?
What do you no longer want to experience?

Your answers are building blocks to your next chapter.

We are exactly where we need to be for transformation, just have to be open to the nudge forward.

What does it mean to you ?
Embracing a holistic lifestyle!

Does it immediately conjure up notions of being so routine and healthy that it might be boring ?
OR
Does it appeal, as you have begun to realise that taking better care of you = valuing yourself, your time, your work/life balance, your family and all the things you hold dear is most important to you !

It may involve being mindful of your thoughts , your physical body, your daily nutrition. It may even involve being mindful of the people you interact with.

Everyday we are offered opportunities that wil upscale or downscale our holistic approach. Be it, taking on extra workload, eating that extra piece of cake, going to workout/ swim / take a yoga class, stay an extra hour at your workplace.

For every decision you make, how mindful are you being ?
There is a constant need for balance in everything we do. A constant drive to achieve and then reward ourselves.

Ask yourself : how does this impact me? Does this bring me peace of mind?

A combination of all the right factors allows us to to live a balanced life. Let’s be realistic , some stress is good but we have to know when to take care of ourselves too.

You can be fit and healthy into your 40’s , 50’s and 60’s with a little mindul work in yourself. Be the Queen not the workhorse. Be an inspiration to your love ones and people you connect with.
