So many benefits to physical activity and walking is something that is accessible to most.

Disease burden is the impact a health problem can have on society, imagine being able to reduce that impact in this one simple step!

First things first, everyone p**ps 💩 !!

However, some will only p**p in the comfort of their own home. Do you have a fear of using a public toilet to move your bowels? I avoided public toilets for years leading to huge issues with constipation and only really got over it once I started working in pelvic health and understood the implications.

The longer you hold onto poo the drier it’ll become and the more difficult and uncomfortable it is to pass. Resisting the urge regularly can also mess with the brain signals and muscles associated with moving your bowels impacting your ability to empty properly.

People with parcopresis have the overwhelming fear of being judged because of the sounds and smells associated with bowel motions.

CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) has been shown to be an effective treatment. Pelvic health physio could also be really helpful if you are struggling with emptying the bowels.

Its World Breastfeeding Week 🌍👶

Whether you breast or bottle feed it is a special time between you and your new baby and it helps with bonding and attachment.

If you are struggling with feeding reach out to your public health nurse or local lactation consultant. There are also some great local support groups in the community

Why? Fear, shame, embarrassment, thinking symptoms are just a normal part of aging.

There are treatments available that can significantly improve or even cure symptoms be they incontinence, heaviness/prolapse, pain. Break the taboo and speak to a health professional. Pelvic health physios are well placed to assess you for any pelvic floor dysfunction.

Vagin-what? Vaginismus is the involuntary response of the muscles at the opening of the va**na to resist anything entering. So the muscles contract and spasm resulting in tightening and the possible prevention of pe*******on altogether. Some people will describe vaginismus like ‘hitting a wall’ or as a ‘blockage in the va**na’ 🧱

Vaginismus can affect females of any age and there are several causes and factors involved which may be emotional, physical or both.

The good news is that yes, vaginismus is treatable and pelvic health physiotherapy can help guide you on the journey. There’s no one size fits all and treatment will depend on findings at assessment. See slides above for possible treatment options for vaginismus. Working with a psychosexual therapist or counsellor also improves outcomes. I am lucky to work alongside a team of great psychosexual therapists in the clinic.

If you think you have vaginismus why not attend for an assessment and start on your road to recovery. Call 091-727777 for appointments with me in Galway city. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

If you don’t know support is available you won’t know who to ask! Speak to your GP, public health nurse or local pelvic health physio if you are experiencing urinary incontinence. There are supports and treatment options.

Be an advocate for your yourself and get the help you deserve.

My mission is to spread awareness amongst the public that help is available, but sometimes we need to seek it out.
