Press Release
The Sudanese Doctors Union of Ireland Meets The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament).
The Sudanese Doctors Union of Ireland (SDUI) participated in a meeting on Tuesday 16th December 2025, with the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Oireachtas at Dáil Éireann, Leinster House, to discuss the ongoing war and humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.
SDUI was invited to address the Committee alongside GOAL Ireland. During the session, SDUI delegates delivered a statement and engaged with Irish Deputies (TDs) and Senators, answering questions and sharing medical, humanitarian, and eyewitness perspectives on the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians and healthcare services.
Representing SDUI, Dr Rania Ahmed and fellow delegates highlighted the following key issues:
• The continued and widespread violations of international humanitarian law, including sexual and gender-based violence committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and other armed groups.
• Repeated massacres in Darfur and other regions, including recent atrocities in El-Fashir, El-Gezira, and multiple areas across Sudan since the outbreak of the war.
• The scale of the humanitarian emergency, with millions displaced, severe food insecurity, and the collapse of Sudan’s already fragile health system.
• Targeted attacks on healthcare workers and health facilities, leaving large parts of the population without access to essential medical care.
• The resilience of the Sudanese people and efforts made by grassroots initiatives in the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
• The role of regional and international actors, including the UAE and Russia, in fuelling the conflict, and the urgent need to halt all external support that prolongs the war.
• Ireland’s responsibility within the international community to strengthen diplomatic efforts and ensure safe, unhindered humanitarian access to all affected areas.
• The European Union’s obligations, particularly in light of its past indirect engagement with the RSF.
SDUI also called on the Irish Government to take practical steps to support the Sudanese living in Ireland including:
• Facilitating family reunification visas.
• Expediting Irish Medical Council (IMC) registration for Sudanese applicants.
SDUI welcomed the opportunity to raise the voices of Sudanese doctors and civilians at the Irish Parliament and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for peace, justice, accountability, and urgent humanitarian support for Sudan.
The Union extends its gratitude to the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade and to all Irish representatives who continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan.
