Following on from our last post, the next term to get our heads around is "Perimenopause".
This word refers to the time frame leading up to the last period (menopause).
The time frame is very variable and can be anything from a few months to 10 years!!
The most important thing to know about the perimenopause is that you will still be having periods during this time. They may not be as frequent or as regular or the way you have been used to however. Changes in your periods is a key thing your doctor will look for when diagnosing perimenopause!
And lastly...you can absolutely be perimenopausal and still having periods! This is often a confusion for people!

A good place to start when educating ourselves on everything menopause related is to familiarise ourselves with some of the medical terms that we hear used.
That big, scary word MENOPAUSE really just means the date of our last period but to be fair it's a fairly significant period...the last one ever!!
Post menopausal is used to describe someone who has not had a period for over 1 year.
Both of these can only be diagnosed after the fact- we might wish each period is our last when we hit this time of life but often periods will return even months after we thought they were long gone!
Our Menopause Matters Clinic runs at Fitzpatricks Medical Waterford. We are happy to see our own patients of other GPs with no referral needed.
