The standard practice in the UK is to advise a preventative approach, treating pets every couple of months even if they don’t have fleas.

But flea treatments include powerful insecticides that have been found to leach off pet fur – and the hands of their owners – into waterways. A recent study also found that songbirds are inadvertently killing their young by making nests out of contaminated pet fur.

There is growing concern about the impact these treatments are having on biodiversity. Imidacloprid and fipronil, for example, are powerful insecticides: one monthly flea treatment for a large dog contains enough imidacloprid to kill 25 million bees.

‼️WANTED‼️LIVE IN GROOM FOR SMALL FAMILY YARD - Horsham, Sussex.
Looking for a kind & knowledgable person to join us on our small family yard in Sussex with our 5 horses (3 in work, two retired). There is a 2 bedroom annex cottage as part of the package & we'd be happy for someone to bring their own horse/dogs. Ideally this is a full time position but we would also consider a part time groom or more flexible arrangement for the right candidate (though even in this case we would like them to live-in). We are a family with riders ranging in ages (2-65 years!) & primarily take part in riding club, eventing & trail hunting (pony club when the little ones grow). We need someone who can take sole charge of three well behaved ladies horses (all under 16h), two retired polo ponies & a lead rein pony when we find one. The successful candidate will need to feel confident in managing the yard & all related duties on their own & there would be occasional housekeeping/errands (such as air port drop off's). If this sounds of interest please get in touch. Advert ID: 5055

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of Heart-Math provide a clue to explain the two-way ′′healing′′ that occurs when we're close to horses.
According to researchers, the heart has an electromagnetic field larger than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the energy field of the heart that radiates from 2.4 meters to 3 meters around the human body.
While this is certainly significant, perhaps more impressive than the electromagnetic field projected by the heart of a horse is five times larger than that of a human being (imagine an electromagnetic sphere around the horse) and it can influence straight into our own heart rate.
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent′′ heart rate (heart rate pattern) that explains why we can feel better when we're close to them. Studies have found a coherent heart pattern or HRV to be a solid measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy-that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adapt to stressful situations very efficiently. Many times, we just need to be in the presence of horses to feel a sense of well-being and peace.
In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits by interacting with horses, including lower blood pressure and heart rate, higher beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters acting as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, decreased feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, better social working; and greater feelings of empowerment, confidence, patience and self-efficacy.
