UNCRPD Core Principles – Respect and Inclusion
The Convention is built on several key principles that governments and public bodies must follow.

A core principle is Respect, meaning every person has equal worth and the freedom to make their own decisions.

Another is Non-discrimination, which states that disabled people must never be treated worse or excluded from work, education, or social life because of their disability.

Other principles include Accessibility, Equality of Opportunity, and Participation and Inclusion.

Defining Disability – The Social Model
The UNCRPD is based on the ‘social model’ of disability . This model recognises that people with impairments are excluded by barriers created by society, such as inaccessible services, the built environment, or prejudice and stigma. Under this model, it is these external obstacles—rather than the impairment itself—that disable an individual. These barriers can also change over time for each person

What is the UNCRPD?
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is an international agreement designed to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights for disabled people. It recognises that everyone is equal and that disabled people have the same rights as everyone else to freedom, respect, and dignity.
The Convention was created because disabled people’s human rights are often not respected, and they face many barriers to inclusion in society.

Social Inclusion Forum
Members of Wexford Disabled Persons Organisation attended a Social Inclusion Forum preparatory workshop delivered by Community Work Ireland and the European Anti Poverty Network.
It was a valuable morning of discussion and exchange with community development groups across County Wexford, focusing on poverty and social inclusion.
Group discussions explored key social issues, including the barriers disabled people face, alongside practical solutions to build a more inclusive society.
Thank you to the organisers for creating the space to come together, share experiences, and strengthen collective understanding.
