HISTORY:

Saint Joseph’s Hospital was founded in 1954 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition and since then it has functioned as a non-profit general hospital in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in the East Part of Jerusalem. Saint Joseph’s Hospital is the only Catholic Hospital in East Jerusalem; it serves the general population of East Jerusalem, West Bank, and Gaza Strip. Joseph Hospital is to serve the community according to the values of the congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Apparition by providing high standard health care services, through a qualified staff in parallel with the latest medical advances of technology, providing a compassionate health care services regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, gender, age, socioeconomic status, and educational level, while preserving the most comfortable safe environment for care, meeting & exceeding customers’ expectations as well. Saint Joseph’s Hospital provides health care services to all people regardless of religion, race, s*x, culture, or economic status. The Hospital which is run by the Sisters is committed to providing quality care to its patients. It is a charitable hospital serving all people in our community. HOSPITAL MEDICAL STRUCTURE:

Saint Joseph Hospital has 155 beds. medical department services are given in most of the medical subspecialties. the surgical department covers most of the aspects of the surgical problems including general surgery, gynecology, urology, orthopedic surgery, and ENT. Obstetrics & gynecology complex and neonatal services. The hospital also has an Intensive Care Unit, a Laboratory, and a Radiology department. Saint Joseph Hospital is currently staffed by 375 employees. HOSPITAL SERVICES & DEPARTMENTS:

Accident and Emergency Department:

Our Accident and Emergency Department operates around the clock and is supported by 12 special beds and a dedicated operating theatre. It provides initial treatment to patients with a wide range of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life-threatening or require immediate attention. After initial assessment and treatment, patients are either admitted to the hospital or discharged. Medical Department:

It is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. The 19-bed ward was renovated in 2019 to maintain a high level of services. Our internists are equipped to deal with whatever problem a patient brings no matter how common or rare or how simple or complex. They are specially trained to solve diagnostic challenges. B. Private Department:

An exclusive ward of 11 rooms with single fully automated electrical beds, telephone, television, attached bathrooms and toilets plus a comfortable sofa for visitors. Our aim is to ensure the highest level of medical and surgical care in a comfortable and luxurious atmosphere. C. ICU and CCU Department:

Intensive Care Units (Critical Care Unit) care patients with the most severe and life-threatening illnesses and injuries; that require constant, close monitoring with the support of special equipment and medication in order to maintain normal bodily functions. The special 6-bed unit functions as the core center in the hospital for new modalities and new medical approaches. It added a new horizon to the services provided by the hospital since it was opened in the year 2000. The unit serves medical and surgical patients. Our goal is to increase our capacity to 10 beds, to meet our constant expansion in the surgical department. The Surgical Department:

As the hospital activities are expanding in surgery, the department was renovated in 2020 to increase its bed capacity from 16 to 28 beds. The surgical department consists of most surgical subspecialties including General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Thoracic Orthopedic Surgery, ENT Surgery, and Gynecologic Surgery with both open and minimally invasive techniques (vaginal and laparoscopic surgery). Additionally, we are considered the number one center for Bariatric surgeries in East Jerusalem. Consultants and Resident doctors with well-trained nursing teams are responsible for giving the best care in a safe environment. Almost two-thirds of our patients are from the Gaza strip and the West Bank. The Palestinian Ministry of Health considers us as a tertiary referral center for the most complicated cases of urology and thoracic surgery due to our highly professional and experienced professors in the fields. Obstetrics & Gynecology Complex:

The self-contained obstetrics and gynecology complex is a newly built addition to Saint Joseph’s with 5 delivery rooms, 2 operating theaters, antenatal and postnatal, well and sick baby care units. All modernly furnished and fully equipped to ensure safe delivery and a healthy start in life. The newly established unit (2015) is run by highly qualified obstetricians, gynecologists, and midwives; at St. Joseph hospital, we believe that all women have the right to informed choices about their pregnancy and delivery. We aim to provide a supportive environment, guiding couples through their pregnancies and preparing them in the best possible way for this unique life event. Our maternity ward services offer a range of medical information facilities designed to suit personal needs. After delivery women can enjoy their stay in a modern 25-bed department in an elegant relaxing atmosphere. Antenatal Classes:

St Joseph Hospital runs a comprehensive antenatal education program that covers topics such as labor and birth, breastfeeding, newborn care, premature and special care, prenatal and post-natal exercises. The classes have been designed not only to better prepare expectant parents but also as an introduction to the hospital staff who will be hands-on during delivery. Minimally Invasive Gynecology:

As technology progresses, the world and everything we use is getting smaller. Gynecologic surgery is no different. With few exceptions, minimally invasive surgery can replace traditional surgery for nearly all gynecologic issues that require surgery: from ovarian cysts to pelvic pain, from fibroids to hysterectomy. At Saint Joseph’s we are committed to providing this state-of-the-art approach for any patient requiring surgical intervention. The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and NCBU:

Located in the maternity department is a 35-bed unit caring for babies needing short and long-term observation and specialized care in addition to 6 incubators reserved for very sick babies. The SCBU has been designed and staffed to provide superior medical and developmental care for our newborns, and communication and support for parents. The care we provide is very much baby and family-centered. Care is delivered by an enthusiastic and friendly team including doctors and neonatal nurses. The highly qualified nurses and specialized doctors in the field have experience in the field of neonatology and care of newborn babies, offering the best quality of care around the clock. In addition, many of the Registered Nurses have additional qualifications in Neonatal Intensive or Special Care Nursing rendering the unit safe and effective in the care of newborns. As Saint Joseph’s is committed to a baby-friendly environment, after delivery well babies will be cared for besides their mother offering the finest newborn services, and a caring environment in which to enjoy one of life's most memorable moments... By providing the latest medical advancements delivered by an experienced team, we give the family peace of mind, knowing that the mother and baby are receiving the finest care possible. Special attention is paid by our special team to encourage and promote bonding & breastfeeding to help babies in their first steps in life so we offer full or partial rooming-in possibilities where the mother and baby are kept together as much as possible. The unit is designed to enable parents to have a lot more involvement in the care of their baby: there are more space, comfortable chairs to help with establishing breastfeeding, and specialists to help families prepare for taking their baby home. The unit is fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment necessary for the care of newborn babies. Operating Theatre:

Our operating theaters function around the clock with excellent nursing and anesthesia staff. We are prepared for emergent surgical procedures, minimally invasive approaches, and a range of elective major surgical procedures (uro-surgery, thoracic, gynecologic, orthopedic, and gastrointestinal). All operations are performed in four fully equipped modern operating theatres. The department also includes a surgical intensive care unit (SICU) for the care of critically ill patients. Outpatient services are available daily and many minor procedures can be performed in outpatient departments or day care wards to shorten the patient’s stay in the hospital. Ambulatory Cardiology Unit:

On an annual count, we serve over 7,750 Outpatients with noninvasive cardiac tests, using the most up-to-date devices. This is a 3-room unit equipped for stress tests, Holter ECG monitoring, trans-thoracic, and trans-esophageal echocardiography, (TTE and TEE), in addition to dobutamine echocardiography. Three cardiologists and two technicians attend our unit. To continue our distinguished services, we intend to upgrade our devices to the latest and most updated version in order to maintain our high-level services. Outpatient Clinics:

St. Joseph outpatient clinics operate as multidisciplinary clinics, specialty clinics, and Physiotherapy. Diagnoses range from fairly simple problems to rare diseases. Medical and para-medical staff work together to provide the full range of treatment. The clinics are run by experienced, senior physicians and specialists. Clinic follow-up is long-term, from diagnosis, through intensive inpatient and outpatient treatment periods. Our department currently consists of the following clinics: Cardiology, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Neonatology, Endocrinology, EMG, PFT, Nutrition, Dermatology, General Surgery, ENT, and Rheumatology. Radiology Department:

The radiology department offers modern imaging services with advanced equipment, ensuring that patients obtain the most accurate and precise results. Our staff provides patients with excellent images that facilitate the most accurate diagnoses and treatment plans. Our imaging capabilities include:
A. Conventional X-Ray
Two Radiographic rooms including Siemen’s equipped with highly sophisticated systems to provide high-quality digital images. Fluoroscopic services: Fluoroscopic Room (including Philips with DVD recorder)
C. Computed Tomography (CT scan)
D. Ultrasound and Doppler imaging
E. Interventional radiology: in which minimally invasive procedures are performed under image guidance. The procedures include different types of biopsies, catheter drainage for kidneys, bile ducts, gall bladder and etc. In addition to central catheters insertion for chemotherapy and dialysis, IVC filter insertion, and different vascular procedures. St. Joseph's radiology department habitually exceeds the accepted professional standard for after-hours services by utilizing a web-based imaging system that integrates PACS (Picture Archiving Communication system), RIS. Our mission is to develop and maintain a world-class radiology department, characterized by its capability to interpret innovations in imaging, information technologies, and image-guided therapies to optimize treatment outcomes. The Pharmacy Department:

One of our most vital units that oversee medication procurement, storage, dispensing, and utilization throughout St Joseph’s Hospital. It is responsible for dispensing medications daily for an average of 155 inpatients. We are looking forward to having a fully computerized system to facilitate the process between wards and the Pharmacy. Laboratory Department:

The laboratory works around the clock throughout the year to support the needs of both inpatients and outpatients with an annual number of 80,000 tests. The lab provides services in the medical specialties of Clinical Hematology and Coagulation, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Body fluids analysis. The lab works under strict quality assurance standards that assure the best quality of lab results. To further improve the quality of lab results, the lab is participating with the College of American Pathology for external quality control. The lab services are expanding in order to cover the increasing activities of the hospital; a 24-hour Blood Bank was established and licensed by the Ministry of Health to provide both medical and surgical patients with safe transfusion products. As we look forward to covering the needs of the hospital and decreasing the number of tests sent to referral labs, a plan is established to expand the services of the lab by purchasing automated and advanced equipment to cover various fields of tests, such as Clinical Endocrinology and Clinical Pharmacology. Admission Office:

The admission office is open 24 hours a day seven days a week. The main office is the first and last point of contact most patients have with the hospital as they are registered, admitted, and discharged by a highly well-trained staff. Support Services:

Departments within our hospital that carry out much of the "behind the scenes" work, support the work carried out by our frontline departments, and are just as crucial. Without them, the hospital would simply not run. The work carried out by these support services ranges from providing food to patients, to maintaining a clean and safe hospital.
