For some parents, bed-sharing is the only way their baby can sleep. Rather than talking to parents about how to do it safely, we try to pretend it doesn’t exist

It’s deeply ingrained, this habit of putting hats on newborns. Search online for images of newborns and almost all of them are togged up in a woolly hat, for all the world like they are about to go outside for a snowball fight. So why do we do it? And why do so many midwives […]

https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-study-attempting-to-identify-cause-of-and-biomarker-for-sudden-infant-death-syndrome-sids/ A very important study but “The odds ratios in the paper for healthy babies compared to babies who died from SIDS are between 0.6 and 0.89 – this means that for babies with low levels of butyrylcholinesterase the risk of SIDS was up to 66% higher than normal. By contrast, we know that smoking in pregnancy increases the risk by 400% – so this is a small risk by comparison.

“The study shows a small difference in the activity level of butyrylcholinesterase, taken just after birth, between those babies who died of SIDS and those who died of something else or didn’t die. Got this message today from a former student and had to share-
"Hey Debby, I wanted to write you and tell you that thanks to the infant and child cpr and choking course I did with you I was able to save a 16 month old last night. We were at friends house having Shabbat dinner and their little one fell backwards in her chair and hit her head. She was eating at the time so she started choking on the schnitzel she was eating. They thought to begin with, that she just caught her breath, then they realized she was choking. The dad started hitting her on the back and that’s when I stepped in and took her. She was small enough that I could easily hold her one handed and I did 5 blows on the back, flipped her and did 5 on the front. By the time I flipped her again she started to cry and was ok. She turned very blue though. Thank goodness it worked out though. I am not usually the calm one in these situations"

I teach about the Triple Risk Model when discussing the risk of SIDS....this is the first study to identify a biochemical marker......“This discovery changes the narrative around SIDS and is the start of a very exciting journey ahead. We are going to be able to work with babies while they are living and make sure they keep living,” Dr Harrington said.
