There we go!
I took the plunge to organize two workshops in the Netherlands in 2024. It has been a bit wild to plan anything ahead, but we can also not put our entire lives on hold so this is what I have for now.
Dates; 8-10-11 May, Natural dyeing and working with mordant pastes (remember that stunning scarf I made? That is exactly what we will be doing.)
13-14-15 May, Botanical Printing with a colored background.

Hi I am back with a SINK!

Lately I was not feeling inspired and having little real news to tell you. Because work sucked me in. Because the daily grind left me uninspired. Because moving the studio left me without water and a possibility to properly dye or print, and it was overflowing with materials.

And it was soul sucking.

I knew it was time to move, I looked, I went on trips with real estate agents. I saw everything from unlivable sheds to overpriced offices. And then it came…the right place in the right time. I (well, we, I could not do it without my crew) painted, we moved, we cleaned, we tossed, we had trips to IKEA and made 12 hour days for two weeks in a row.

Now it is a l m o s t finished. A please for research, a place to teach, proper storage, a lab, a kitchen with a large sink and electricity, shelves for dyes and mordants. I am so proud and so exhausted but I know it was the price to pay to move on to better things and doing what I love.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting ‘Ptil Tekhelet’ to do some research on the extremely rare dyes prepared from mollusks.
How it works; the gland of specific sea snails contains indigotin, dibromoindigotin, indirubin and sometimes even isatin. In short; it’s like an indigoferra plant on steroids.
We make vats from the extracted glands and the influence of sunlight during the process determines the shade: purple (Argaman) or blue (Tekhelet).

I will be busy in the lab today and the upcoming days making many samples and running tests.

Lately I have been remembering how, as a teen, I wanted to become either a biologist or an archeologist. Now, at 45, I realize that is exactly what I am and the best of both worlds. It’s a wonderful place to be at.

Eucalyptus love. The tree tracker inside my head has been working well. That one tree near this and that on the corner of whatever, the one with the white flowers that always gives vibrant oranges as long as you let it simmer and simmer...
Since I started eco printing I have an entirely different kind of mental map to trust on when I am driving. I could tell you blind how to get somewhere just by explaining how to travel to that pecan tree, those rose bushes, where the wild asparagus grows. It feels like a different dimension has been added to my brain.

Lichen dyes are a whole field of dyeing on their own. They don’t need a mordant and it is said they are very very light fast. These are samples made with oak moss. Don’t go foraging lichens on your own please, unless they are already ‘free’ you are blind to damage the tree.
On the website we have mindfully forested lichens now; oak moss and Icelandic moss. I will be experimenting the upcoming months with both and report back to you with results and recipes!

Eco printing has been my therapy for a good few years. It has been the thing that has kept me sane and calm, and reduced the anxiety I was experiencing after a few years of extremely traumatic experiences.
In May 2019 I started my supply store.
That has been a wonderful, wild ride. I love what I do, I love the people I work with.
But. It became obvious very fast that it was impossible to do both the shop and keep eco printing every day. I was ok with that. Then the Corona pandemic started and printing was put on the back burner altogether while the entire family was all trying to cope with being together in a small space 24/7.

I did a lot of research with (smaller scale) natural dyes which I must say has been amazing, but I did miss the process of foraging and being mindful and focussed in my zone. Wonderful moments of focus I do not find in other activities usually.

So when I was approached by a designer who wanted to work with me and had a space to offer me to work in, I did not think twice. Now I get to go outside to a kibbutz and spend a good few hours there experimenting and getting back in the saddle after this horrible hiatus.

Warm, chocolate browns and velvety grays for an autumn palette. Different tannin rich dyes with and without a pinch of ferrous sulfate.
Brown lowest samples are cutch at 50%, top is quebracho. Wool strings are pomegranate with iron.
