I assume the switch from coffee to matcha was to feel a more relaxed nervous system.

Let’s take a look at the energetics of coffee & matcha, to understand the long term effects of drinking them.

Coffee =
rūkṣa (dry), tīkṣṇa (sharp), uṣṇa (heating), chala (moving), rājasic (stimulating)

Matcha =
laghu (light), slightly rūkṣa (dry), mildly uṣṇa (heating), sara (flowing), sāttvic–rājasic (clear, but still stimulating)

Nervous system dysregulation begins with Vata being aggravated, and over time moves into Pitta aggravation.

And all of these energetics listed, increase Vata and Pitta in the body.

Matcha does have a slightly more sāttvic quality, which is more stabilizing, but long term use, for a calm nervous system, is possibly not the direction to go in.

Enjoy your coffee. Enjoy your matcha.
This is just looking at them through an Ayurvedic lens so you can understand how to actually care for your nervous system.

When you do enjoy them,
– drink them warm (cold weakens digestion)
– add quality milk to buffer the dryness + sharpness
– and drink small amounts after a meal

That ahhhh moment, once you start menstruating and the world starts making sense again. However, we can reframe our minds to make our luteal phase make sense too. Ayurveda offers an understanding of how to take care of yourself during this time.

*Disclaimer: if you have severe symptoms during luteal, it is a sign of imbalance and is best treated in 1-1 sessions, not with general advice.*

Ayurveda recognizes the luteal phase (the phase after ovulation) as a more Kapha-predominant stage. Kapha is water and earth, meaning this dosha naturally accumulates more during this time.

Each person can experience this phase differently, so care during luteal becomes more specific when we understand which dosha is out of balance.

Insomnia, anxiety, and bloating can indicate a Vata imbalance.
Irritation, breakouts, and loose stools can indicate a Pitta imbalance.
Water retention, sugar cravings, and fatigue can indicate a Kapha imbalance.

The most important part is understanding that it’s okay to feel different during this time. It is a natural Kapha-building phase that allows us to slow down and go inward. This awareness, and the permission that comes with it, can shift the way you experience your luteal phase entirely. Embrace it without judgement of “not doing enough” and see where your body takes you. 💫

Honey PSA 📣

Honey is an incredible food and medicine for Spring!

It has the Karma (or actions) of Lekhana, which means to scrape. Helping scrapeeeee out excess winter heaviness, so the natural spring heat can com through and not get stuck, which can potentially cause a lot of imbalances.

Best to buy local, untreated honey, that’s stored in a dark jar 🍯 enjoy honey hunnies!!!

Ayurveda encourages seasonal eating so our bodies can flow with nature’s changes.

Spring is a Kapha-dominant season, when winter’s heaviness begins to melt and move.

For the earth to blossom, it can’t remain heavy and waterlogged, the channels must open.

The same principle applies to the body.
Spring foods help lighten digestion & clear excess Kapha.

This is why they’re especially helpful for allergies, brain fog, sluggish digestion, and spring fatigue.
