This is an incredible story that shows why it's important that medics show up to a call even when it seems minor. they are heroes!
Late last Monday night, United Hatzalah dispatch alerted Effi to a young woman who momentarily lost consciousness. Despite the seemingly minor nature of the call, Effi flicked on the lights and sirens, speeding to the scene on his ambucycle to offer his assistance.
He found the 25-year-old young woman overwhelmed and disoriented, with a pounding headache. There at the scene was a somewhat odd, older man claiming to be her uncle. Suspicious of the sketchy man and his motives, Effi turned to the patient, who confirmed that she barely knew him. The volunteer EMT’s initial assessment revealed worrying signs that the young woman had been drugged! Effi gently reassured the victim that she was safe, as he called for back-up. When asked if the man had made any advances, the patient responded yes, fainted again and began convulsing.
Additional responders joined Effi on the scene and distanced the man from the traumatized young woman. As the patient slowly regained consciousness, she held on tightly to the United Hatzalah volunteer’s hand. Effi stayed with the victim, providing medical and emotional support in the back of an arriving ambulance. He then joined the crew in evacuating her to the emergency room for further observation and definitive care.
It wasn’t until much later that Effi made it back to the scene, picked up his ambucycle, and headed back home. The drama and risks involved in this call were incredibly intense, but Effi was glad to have been there for the young woman in her moment of need.
