In our previous post, we explored the stages of idea generation, turning those ideas into concrete solution models, and kicking off initial prototype development.

Now, we’ve reached a crucial phase where concepts and insights truly come to life—prototype creation.

Why build prototypes?
A prototype is a simplified representation of a proposed service, designed to test and evaluate its feasibility and potential impact on users. After its creation, the prototype is put through extensive user testing to assess its usability, viability, and overall effectiveness. These tests often uncover new insights and deliver direct feedback on what’s working, what’s not, and the reasons behind both. By iterating based on this feedback, we ensure that when our services are finally launched, they are backed by deep understanding and real-world validation.

After defining the challenges and delving into the lives of our users, we arrive at the most creative stage—idea generation, prioritization, and modeling them into tangible solutions.

Ideas are drawn from the insights gained in the prior research phase. To fuel creativity, we use various techniques such as brainstorming and mind mapping, encouraging as many ideas as possible—no matter how far-fetched they may seem!

Once the ideas are on the table, we move to the prioritization stage. This ensures resources are invested in ideas with the greatest potential to address the challenge effectively.

The most promising ideas are then expanded into detailed solution models. This step bridges the gap between abstract concepts and actionable plans, outlining how the service will function, look, and impact end users.

Often, this stage includes prototype development to test and refine the detailed solutions.

What is Service Design? How does the process work?

Service Design is a process that combines creating services that fulfill customer needs while designing experiences that impact users. So how does it actually work?

1. Defining and formulating the challenge: Identifying the problem or opportunity at hand.

2. Mapping the challenge arena: Mapping stakeholders and the system surrounding the problem.

3. Ethnographic research and customer journeys: Learning and understanding the human factor while gaining insights into the needs, behaviors, and barriers of the target audience.

4. Solution model: Developing ideas for solutions, prioritizing them based on feasibility and impact, and characterizing a solution model.

5. Prototype - The final stage before development is conducting user testing and building a prototype to collect feedback and make necessary adjustments.

In upcoming posts, we will delve deeper into each of these stages and examine the strategies that make service design a powerful approach for creating impactful services.
