Last week at IASMA Journal Club we asked: what does 3 days in space do to your immune system?

Short answer: more than you'd expect - and it lasts longer than you'd think.

The Inspiration4 crew weren't professional astronauts. They were 4 civilians - trained for weeks, not years - chosen so scientists could study how a real human body responds to space.

Key finding: immune disruption persisted for months. Full recovery was never confirmed. Men recovered more slowly than women. And the patterns held up across multiple independent datasets.

Recording coming soon. Follow IASMA for the next session.

🚀 Journal Club tonight at 18:00 (GMT+3)

We're diving into a landmark study: the first single-cell immune profiling of an all-civilian spaceflight crew - SpaceX Inspiration4.

What happens to your immune system after just 3 days in space? The answer is more surprising than expected.

Is Spaceflight "Better" for One Gender?

The Biological Reality of Men vs. Women in Orbit 👩‍🚀👨‍🚀

As missions move beyond low Earth orbit, the focus on "who" is going is as important as "how" they get there.

The SpaceX Inspiration4 mission provided a first-of-its-kind molecular portrait of a diverse crew, revealing that our immune system's "activation switch" doesn't look the same for everyone.

Does a faster recovery time for one s*x mean they are "better" suited for space, or does it simply demand a more personalized medical approach?

Where does the "Spaceflight Signature" hit the hardest?

"These data showed a pronounced s*x- and cell-type specificity regarding responsiveness and recovery from spaceflight."

On May 10 at 18:00 IST, Srihari "Hari" Balaji, R&D Engineer and Columbia University M.S. graduate, will lead a Journal Club deep-dive into the Inspiration4 immune data.

We will explore why CD14 Monocytes are the slowest cells to recover and how T-cells hold the line in microgravity.

This session is for anyone fascinated by the intersection of biology, space exploration, and the future of personalized healthcare for astronauts.

The most extreme circadian disruption experiment?
It’s happening 400 km above Earth-on the International Space Station.
🚀 16 sunrises per day
😴 Chronic sleep disruption
🧠 Measurable effects on human physiology
Spaceflight pushes the circadian system beyond anything we see on Earth - and gives us a unique window into how sleep, timing, and biology are connected.
Aerospace medicine isn’t just about space.
It’s helping us rethink:

🌙✨ LIVE TODAY ON NETFLIX — HUMANS ARE GOING AROUND THE MOON

For the first time in over 50 years, astronauts are flying to the Moon 🚀 And you can watch it from your couch.

Netflix is streaming the Artemis II lunar flyby

👇 📺 Open Netflix → Search "NASA+" 🕐 Started at 1PM ET | 8PM Israel Time

🧑‍🚀 Crew: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch & Jeremy Hansen 🌍

They're about to travel farther from Earth than ANY human in history ⚡

There'll even be a 40-min communications blackout as they pass behind the Moon 🌑

This is real. This is now. This is history.

Can AI sense exhaustion before a pilot does? ✈️🧠

New research is changing the way we look at pilot safety.

The Problem: Fatigue causes 20% of accidents, but subjective reporting is often too late.

The Study: 90 pilots + wearable ECG sensors + Real missions.
The Science: Tracking HRV (Heart Rate Variability) to "see" exhaustion in the nervous system.

At IAsMA, we believe the future of the cockpit is physiological. If we can monitor the pilot as well as we monitor the engines, we save lives.

A quick update from the IASMA team.

Given the current situation in the Middle East, we feel it is best to hit pause and reschedule our next Journal Club.

We want to ensure that all our members can participate fully and focus on science when the time is right.

We’re thinking of all those affected and hope for calmer days ahead. We will update the event link with the new date as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support. Stay tuned.
Stay safe, everyone!

Spaceflight is one of the most extreme environments the human body can experience. 🚀

What can just four days in orbit teach us about the immune system?

At our next IAsMA Journal Club, we’re breaking down a landmark Nature Communications study from the Inspiration4 mission - and exploring what it means for both astronauts and patients here on Earth.

Here’s what we’ll unpack together:
1️⃣ The Spaceflight Signature - Consistent molecular patterns observed during space missions.
2️⃣ Immune Adaptation & Suppression - Why some immune responses shift during and after flight.
3️⃣ Sex-Based Recovery Patterns - What early data suggests about differences in biological response.
This is a safe space to explore science - student-led, curiosity-driven, and open to anyone interested in aerospace medicine and human physiology.

Whether you’re in medicine, engineering, research, or just space-curious - come learn with us.
