Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is a life-saving treatment used for several blood disorders and blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and thalassemia.

In this video, I explain the Bone Marrow Transplant procedure step-by-step in a simple and easy-to-understand way. From donor selection to stem cell infusion and recovery, this video will help patients and caregivers understand how the transplant process works.

Topics covered in this video:
• What is Bone Marrow Transplant?
• Who needs a Bone Marrow Transplant
• Types of transplant (Autologous vs Allogeneic)
• Step-by-step BMT procedure
• Donor matching and stem cell collection
• Hospital stay and recovery

Bone marrow transplant can offer curative treatment for many hematological diseases, and awareness about this procedure is very important.

Women are conditioned to endure — fatigue, discomfort, heavy cycles, stress.

But persistent tiredness, unexplained weakness, or abnormal bleeding are not simply part of being strong.

They can reflect underlying blood disorders, clotting abnormalities, or marrow-related conditions.

This Women’s Day, redefine strength.

Strength is asking questions.
Strength is getting tested.
Strength is choosing prevention over postponement.

Prioritize your health. Not someday. Today.

🌍 World Obesity Day – Obesity & Blood Health

On World Obesity Day (March 4), most discussions focus on diabetes and heart disease.
But there is another important aspect that deserves attention — your blood health.

Scientific evidence clearly shows that obesity is associated with:

🩸 Higher Risk of Blood Clots
Obesity increases clot-forming factors in the body and is a proven independent risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism.

🩸 Increased Risk of Certain Blood Cancers
Large epidemiological studies have shown a higher risk of:
• Multiple Myeloma
• Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
• Acute Myeloid Leukemia

🩸 Chronic Low-Grade Inflammation
Excess body fat creates persistent inflammation in the body, which affects iron regulation, clotting balance, and overall bone marrow health.

Obesity is not just a lifestyle issue.
It is a chronic medical condition with systemic effects — including hematological consequences.

On this World Obesity Day, the goal is awareness — not stigma.
Prevention, early screening, and timely intervention can significantly reduce long-term complications.

🩸 Thalassemia Major & The Curative Role of Bone Marrow Transplant

Thalassemia Major is a severe inherited blood disorder caused by defective hemoglobin production. Children affected by this condition develop severe anemia within the first year of life and require lifelong regular blood transfusions to survive.

While transfusions save lives, they also lead to:
• Iron overload affecting heart, liver, and endocrine organs
• Growth delay and bone changes
• Increased risk of infections
• Reduced quality of life

🌟 The Game Changer: Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)

A Bone Marrow Transplant (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant) replaces the defective bone marrow with healthy stem cells from a suitable donor.

✅ Replaces diseased marrow
✅ Restores normal hemoglobin production
✅ Eliminates need for lifelong transfusions
✅ Offers a potential permanent cure

When performed at the right time—especially in younger patients with a matched donor—success rates are excellent.

Early diagnosis, timely referral, and proper donor search can transform a child’s life from transfusion-dependent survival to a curative future.

As a Hematologist & Bone Marrow Transplant Specialist, I strongly believe awareness and early action can change outcomes for many families battling thalassemia.

🩸 How to Keep Your Blood Healthy After 30

1️⃣ Check Your Numbers Annually
✔ CBC
✔ Iron profile
✔ B12 & Vitamin D
✔ Blood sugar & lipids

2️⃣ Eat for Hematologic Health
🥬 Iron-rich foods (greens, lentils)
🥚 Protein daily
🍊 Vitamin C for iron absorption
❌ Avoid excessive junk & ultra-processed foods

3️⃣ Protect Your Bone Marrow
🚭 No smoking
🍷 Limit alcohol
💊 Avoid unnecessary medications

4️⃣ Prevent Deficiencies Early
Women: screen for iron deficiency
Vegetarians: monitor B12
After 40: periodic anemia screening

5️⃣ Watch for Warning Signs
⚠ Persistent fatigue
⚠ Frequent infections
⚠ Easy bruising
⚠ Unexplained weight loss

Early testing = Early correction = Better long-term health

Had the wonderful opportunity to deliver a CME session in Gandhidham with the support of Indian Medical Association – Gandhidham branch. More than 50 doctors joined for an engaging academic discussion on Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant. We explored practical case-based approaches, recent advances, and transplant strategies relevant to day-to-day clinical practice.

Truly encouraged by the active participation, thoughtful questions, and shared commitment toward improving hematology care in our region. Academic exchange like this strengthens our medical community and ultimately benefits our patients. Grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to more such meaningful interactions.

I have treated many patients with blood disorders, but some cases truly test the limits of medicine, science, and faith.

This was one such rare and extremely high-risk Bone Marrow Transplant for patient with MDS/MPN with Increased blast.

The patient had been denied transplant at four different centers across Gujarat because of multiple high-risk features:

• Poor cardiac function (EF 35–40%)
• Active invasive fungal infection
• Massive splenomegaly
• Blood transfusion requirement almost every 4th day
• Very high anti-HLA antibodies (MFI >50,000) — not responding to desensitization

And above all, there was no matched sibling donor and no matched unrelated donor available, leaving us with the challenge of proceeding with a haplo-identical transplant.

Medically fragile. Immunologically complex. Logistically difficult.

But when God helps, everything falls into place in a better way.

With meticulous planning, close monitoring, aggressive infection control, and a committed transplant team, we moved ahead.

Today, I am grateful to share that he is going home post-transplant in stable condition and good health.

High risk does not mean no hope.
It means we prepare better, monitor closer, and fight harder.

Grateful to my team. Grateful for the trust of the patient and family. And grateful for divine grace.

On a journey to spread awareness about anemia and its silent impact on health.

Today, I had the privilege of conducting another engaging session with urban women, discussing anemia, its symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early detection.

Anemia often goes unnoticed, yet it affects energy, productivity, and overall well-being.

Through these sessions, my goal is to empower women with the right knowledge so they can recognize warning signs and seek timely care.

Awareness is the first step toward prevention.

Small changes in nutrition, lifestyle, and regular health check-ups can make a big difference.

Committed to educating, empowering, and improving women’s health — one session at a time.

He walked in as a patient.
Today, he walks out as a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma survivor. 💛

From diagnosis to chemotherapy, from fear to faith — this brave young fighter completed his treatment with incredible courage.

Now, he is disease-free and back to living his childhood.

✨ A reminder: Hodgkin’s lymphoma is one of the most curable cancers, especially when detected early and treated appropriately.

Painless lymph node swelling, prolonged fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss should never be ignored. Early action saves lives.

Medicine treats.
Courage heals.
Hope wins.

1.5 years post Bone Marrow Transplant…
Today she visited my Bhuj OPD — healthy, confident, and living a completely normal life.

What made this visit extra special was the beautiful jacket she made herself and gifted me. Such fine art, such detailing — a reflection of her strength and creativity.

From fighting a life-threatening illness to creating art with her own hands… this is the true success of BMT.
Grateful to witness her second innings of life.
