Important Tips for Giving Iron Syrup to Children

Best Time: Give iron syrup on an empty stomach for better absorption.

Foods to Avoid: Do not give milk, paneer, curd, or calcium-rich foods close to iron doses. Maintain a gap of a few hours.

Avoid with Medicines: Do not give iron syrup alongside calcium supplements or antacids as they hinder absorption.

Teeth Staining: Iron syrup can stain teeth black. Use a straw and rinse the mouth with water after giving the syrup.

Black Stools: Iron supplements may cause blackish stools, this is normal and not a concern.

With Citrus: Giving iron syrup with lemon water or orange juice improves absorption due to vitamin C.

Constipation: If constipation occurs, include fiber-rich foods in the child’s diet.
