LIVE IN THE WAY OF AYURVEDA - Follow the path of Ayurveda to lead a healthy life :-
1) Waking Up - Ideal time to wake up is before 45 minutes of sunrise as well as Brahma muhurta. Benefits of wake up in early morning has been described briefly in previous post of BRAHM MUHURTA JAGARAN.
2) Drink Warm Water - Take luke warm water or dawn water (ushapan) after waking up is a healthy habit, helps in flushing toxins (ama) in body and cleanses our intestines. If the water is stored in copper vessel overnight, you will get better benefits.
3) Evacuation / Stool & Urination - If pressure comes expel out body f***s and urine. Alternate nostril breathing may also help. After evacuation wash the a**l or***ce with warm water, then the hands, face and legs with soap.
4) Cleansing of Eye - Put water in mouth and take eye washable water at your folded palm (ANJALI) at the time of eye wash and drop the mouth water after wash
Tridoshic eyewash: try triphala eyewash -¼ tsp. in 1 cup water, boil for 10 minutes, cool and strain.
Pitta eyewash: use cool water or rose water from organic rose petals - most commercial rose water has chemicals in it that will sting the eyes.
Kapha eyewash: try diluted cranberry juice, 3-5 drops in a teaspoon of distilled water.
5) Cleansing of Teeth / Dantadhaban - Brushing your teeth daily in morning and bedtime with Tejavati, Babul, Neem, Karanja, Madhup according to different seasons or toothpaste. You may clean your teeth after every heavy meal which will protect your teeth for a long time. Roasted almond shell powder can be used for vata and kapha, and ground neem for pitta. Always use KATU,TIKTA & KASHAYA toothpaste or powder.
6) Cleansing of Tongue - After cleansing of teeth scrap your tongue at one way with stem bark of above said herbs or tongue cleaner. Vata can use a gold scraper, Pitta a silver one, and Kapha copper. Stainless steel can be used by all people. Bacteria, dead cells are removed by tongue scrapping and improves oral health and sense of taste also.
7) Gargle / Gandusha - Rinse your mouth with oil or kwath or juice for 1-2 minutes and thrown away. This process pulls out oral toxins and rejuvenate the oral cell.
Dhumrapan - Take dhumpana according ritu, prakriti and doshas like haridra, bacha, ela etc.
8) Take a gold, silver or any other metallic vessel filled with ghee (cows ghee) and watch for 5 minutes with relaxing mind.
9) Collyrium / Anjana - Anjana is paste made with herbs is to be applied at inner part of eyelids. It is used to protect eye and maintain good eye health and vision.
Sauviranjanan can apply daily but Rasanjana should applied every 5 or 8 days in night only.
10) Nasya / Nasal Application - Drop 2 - 4 drops of oil/taila like anu taila, shadbindu taila, ksheerbala taila, til taila (sesame oil), nariel taila (coconut oil) or ghoghrita (cows ghee) at each nostril at empty stomach in morning. Nasya should taken at lying posture and keep a thin pillow under neck. Oil or ghee should little warm.
For vata: sesame oil, ghee, or vacha (calamus) oil.
For pitta: brahmi ghee, sunflower or coconut oil.
For kapha: vacha (calamus root) oil.
11) Karna Purana / Oil Pulling in Ear - Conditions such as ringing in the ears, excess ear wax, poor hearing, lockjaw, and TMJ, are all due to vata in the ears. Putting 5 drops of warm sesame oil in each ear can help these disorders.
12) Kshaur Karma/ Cutting of Hair, Beard, Nail - Minimum 3 times in 14 days.
13) Asana / Exercise - Perform exercise as well as yogasanas till shortness of breath. This should not performed by children and old age person.
Vata: Sun salutation x 12, done slowly; Leg lifting; Camel; Cobra; Cat; Cow. Slow, gentle exercise.
Pitta: Moon salutation x 16, moderately fast; Fish; Boat; Bow. Calming exercise.
Kapha: Sun salutation x 12, done rapidly; Bridge; Peacock; Palm tree; Lion. Vigorous exercise.
After exercise, sit quietly and do some deep breathing exercises as follows:
12 alternate nostril breaths for vata;
16 cooling sh*tali breaths (curling up your tongue lengthwise and breathing through it) for pitta;
100 bhastrika (short, fast breaths) for kapha.
14) Intake of Decoction / Kwath Pana - Kwath is decoction of a single or multiple herbs, should drink at morning. It eliminates various doshas from body. There has various kwath described in ayurveda text according to disease and season.
15) Abhyanga or Udwartan / Oil or Dry massage - Before bath, medicated oil or sesame oil should applied over whole body and massage gently for 30 minutes. Massage may performed by using powder herbs also. Then hot water steam should applied over body for 5-7 minutes. Instead of steam one may sit at sunlight. Hot water steam should not applied at feet, chest and eye. Oil massage improves internal circulation of blood, provides lubrication for all joints and tissues.
16) Bath & Refreshment / Snana - This is a daily practice removes malas from skin. Bathing improves agni (digestive power), provides health, longevity, and enhances sexual drive, energy and strength. It removes kandu (itching), mala, shram (fatique), sweda (sweat), lethargy, trishna (thirst), daha (burning sensation). Pouring warm water below the neck while bathing gives strength to the body. Little warm water for body and normal water for head as warm water is bad for eyes and hairs.
One should not take bath in next three hours after having food. Bathing after having a meal leads to indigestion, nausea, and abdominal discomfort.
Wear clean clothes after bath which brings virtue.
Using natural scents, essential oils, or perfumes brings freshness, charm, and joy. It gives vitality to the body and improves self-esteem.
For vata the best scent to use is hina or amber.
For pitta try using sandalwood, or jasmine.
For kapha use either amber or musk.
17) Prayer & Spiritual Practices - MANTRA, the sound of the word never gets ruined and that it has an everlasting value.
After prayer touch the ground with your right hand, then the same hand to the forehead, with great love and respect to Mother Earth.
In Ayurveda, Mantra is often used to balance the doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
You may practice spiritual practices and meditation as your own way with a pure mind.
Hawan or Yagna is a very important practice which creates positive urges and the fire & smoke kills germs in house. Fire of Yagna have to burning at the direction of east or north.
18) Ahara / Having Meal - Ideal time to take meal is 11 am to 1 pm or PITTA KALA. We should take two part solid food, one part liquid food and one part should remain empty for vata. For balancing Tridosha BIBHITAKI may take before meal, AMALAKI in between meal and HARITAKI after meal.
Acharya Charaka has advised some qualities of food are as a)Ushnamashniyat(consuming warm food) b) Matravatashniyat(Balanced Diet ) c)Jeerneashniyat (Meal taken after digestion of previous meal) d)Veeryaviruddhamashniyat e)Naativilambitamashniyat (Not eating too slowly) f)Ajalpanahasan tanmanabhunjeet (Eating
without talking or laughing, mindful eating) g)Atmanamabhisamikshya bhunjeet samyak ( Eating after a**lyzing one’s needs) h)Snigdhamashniyat (Diet should include fat) i)Ishtadeshe ishtasarvopkarnam chashniyat (Meal taken at proper place and with proper instruments) j)Naatidrutamashniyat (Not eating too fast)
Not to do-
Eating when not hungry, Eating soon after meal, Eating at the wrong time of the day, Eating incomplete food combinations, Overeating,Eating too much heavy too little light food, Eating hurriedly, Emotional eating, Eating food one cannot digest, Eating when constipated, Drinking cold or chilled water, especially during meal, Too much water or no water at all during a meal, Preserved and stale food, Frozen food, Too spicy, sour, salty food.
According to Sushrutacharya, Achokshyam (dirty), Dushta (affected by poison etc.), Utsrutam (left over), Pashana-truna-lashtavata (containing stone, grass and dust), Dwishta (disliked), vyush*tam (stale), Aswadu (unpalatable) and Puti (putrified food) should be discarded. Chirsiddham (Food which is cooked long before) ,Sthira (hard),Sheetam (cold), ushnikrutam puna (reheated), Ashantam (incompletely strained) and Upadagdham(over burned) is not palatable (loses its natural taste) and as such should be discarded.
Examples of incompatibility/antagonistic (Viruddha-Aahara)
Veerya Viruddha (potency incompatibility) - fish + milk.
Sanskar Viruddha (processing incompatibility) - heated honey.
Matra Viruddha (dose incompatibility) - honey + cow's ghee mixed in equal proportion.
Krama Viruddha - hot water after taking honey.
Kala Viruddha - (time incompatibility) pungent substance in summer and cold substances in winter.
Krama Viruddha (order incompatibility) - consuming curd at night. Taking Madhura Rasa food or Dravya at the end of meals and Tikta and Katu Rasa Dravyas (food substances) at the starting of meals.
Samyoga Viruddha (combination incompatibility) - fruit salad or milk + banana.
Parihar Viruddha (contraindication incompatibility) - consuming cold water immediately after having hot tea or coffee.
19) Post Meal Activities - Until your meal digested, you have to sit like king upto 45 minutes to 1 hour. Walking of 100 steps after sitting is also helpful to convert food to energy.
Sleeping in daytime is strictly prohibited for healthy life except children, old age and diseased person. In Grishma ritu (summer season) you can take a little nap to manage tiredness. Everyone should consume at least one seasonal fruit daily 2 hours after having meal.
20) Mood Relaxing - Practicing Classical music, instrumental music, devotional music, Gardening, Indoor game or outdoor game (if possible) provides you a additional benefit to your mind and body.
21) Dinner - Dinner should take before 8 pm and should be light and easily digestive. You may drink godugdha (cows milk) with haldi (turmeric) after 1 hour of dinner. Curd should not eat at night.
Dinner should complete before 2 hours of sleep at night. If you take your dinner at 7.30 pm you have to sleep between 9:30 to 10 pm. At the time of sleep you should remind all your works, activities during the whole day and remember your adorable.
Bed should have height of your knee height and clean-tidy for safe and sound sleep.
