Homeopathy is the art and science of healing by safe gentle, natural methods. The word is coined from the Greek words ‘homois’ meaning like or similar and ‘pathos’ meaning suffering. It works on the principle of ‘similia similibus curentur’ which means that what will cause will cure. Therefore a substance that will cause a disease in a healthy person when given in large doses will also cure a sick person suffering with similar symptoms when treated with potentized doses of the same substance. This potentized caused (homeopathic) substance will help to stimulate the bodies own healing power. The concept has been known since Hippocrates in 450 B.C and has been further developed down the ages until full scientific examination was undertaken by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century an early 19th century. Homeopathy is holistic and treats the whole person and not just the symptoms, believing that symptoms are the body’s own attempts at self healing and then any suppression of the symptoms will drive the disease further into the body.
