The Top 20 Incubation Startups and Top 25 Pre-Incubation Startups under the North East Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NEEDP) were awarded additional grants during the Northeast Startup Summit held in Guwahati recently.

As per the mandate of the programme, the Top 20 startups in the Incubation batch and the Top 25 startups in the Pre-Incubation batch received grants of Rs. 7 lakhs and Rs. 4 lakhs each. Notably, this grant supplements the Rs. 1 lakh prototype grant for each of the 150 startups in pre-incubation and the Rs. 3 lakh commercialisation grant for each of the 120 startups in the incubation batch.

This additional funding, coupled with the comprehensive support provided through NEEDP, including knowledge sessions, bootcamps and the previously disbursed grants, is expected to accelerate the growth of the startups, assisting them in fulfilling their business needs.

2-day Product and Design Intervention Program for NRETP-incubated enterprises in Assam

A two-day Product and Design Intervention Program was organised for six enterprises incubated under the NRLM and IIMCIP-led NRETP Incubator Programme, on February 6 and 7, 2024, with North Eastern Handicrafts & Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC) as the training partner. The NRETP-incubated enterprises, mainly dealing in water hyacinth products and traditional jewellery, received training and exposure on the design processes, aligning with current market trends and packaging through a task-based approach. To ensure the effective delivery of the program's training, participants were surveyed prior to the program using a questionnaire, which focused on their enterprises, product range, challenges and pricing strategies. Furthermore, a dedicated session was conducted on photography to help the entrepreneurs acquire aesthetic photography skills to make their product photographs aesthetically appealing to their consumers.

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Sriparna B. Baruah, Advisor at NEHHDC, for her proactive involvement in ensuring the successful delivery of the training program. We look forward to collaborations with NEHHDC as we work towards the common mission of uplifting and enhancing the businesses of our rural enterprises.

Further, when asked about sectors he finds promising for investment, Mr. Chhikara mentioned the emergence of numerous D2C brands and technology startups from the region, alongside its traditional handloom and handicraft industries that piqued his interest.

We express our gratitude to Mr. Jayanta Das, Area Director – North East, Darjeeling, Bhutan & Nepal, at The The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), for his enlightening presentation during the Northeast Startup Summit.

IHCL, a hospitality division of the Tata Group, has been making a positive impact on local communities in Northeast India by fostering job opportunities, engaging in CSR initiatives and supporting local enterprises, particularly startups.

Highlighting the significant potential of startups in driving socio-economic growth in the region, Mr. Das identified key sectors such as tea, bamboo, agriculture, farmgate value addition, oil, natural gas and IT as holding immense opportunities for startups. He also outlined specific areas of collaboration where IHCL is eager to engage, including the development of innovative food and beverage products with local flavours, enhancing supply chain management for raw materials, local advertising and marketing endeavours for joint campaigns, supporting ancillary tourism offerings like houseboats, charters and cars and strategic engineering projects.

The North Eastern Council, in partnership with IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, introduced a first-of-its-kind initiative in September 2022 known as the North East Entrepreneurship Development Program. The aim was to discover and support 270 promising startups from Northeast India through comprehensive incubation and pre-incubation initiatives. As the inaugural COHORT of the program nears its conclusion with the Northeast Startup Summit, Shri K Moses Chalai, the Secretary of the North Eastern Council, expresses his contentment with the program's results.
