Kapha is balanced by a diet of freshly cooked, whole foods that are light, dry, warming, well-spiced, and relatively easy to digest—ideally served warm or hot.

These foods calm kapha by balancing mucous production, regulating moisture levels, maintaining adequate heat, and by supporting proper digestion and elimination.

One of the key ways to balance the doshas is through what we eat and drink each day, and just as importantly- how and when.

Those with aggravated pitta may also have poor digestion with excess acidity and strong thirst.

Eating more cooling foods such as leafy vegetables rich in the bitter taste is a good way of balancing Pitta. Ayurveda agrees with the old saying of ‘lunch like a King’ - digestion is at its strongest during the middle of the day. Pitta types especially need a good lunch by 2pm latest.

Vata constitutes vitality and governs all movement processes at a microcellular and macroscopic level – from the blinking of your eyelids to the movements of your muscles. This form of energy is also responsible for circulation, respiration and the nervous system. Vata is the king of the doshas.

Warming spices, such as pepper, ginger and cardamom, are considered particularly favourable for this Vata type.

According to Ayurveda, the world comprises five elements: space, water, earth, fire, and air. These elements combine to form three life energies — vata, pitta, and kapha — which define each person’s constitution. Each person is a unique combination of the three doshas, but they usually have one or two dominant doshas.

Vata combines air and space, also called ether. It has links to change, mobility, and movement.

According to Ayurveda medicine, it relates to the nervous system and controls breathing, blinking, and circulation.

Do you practise mindful eating?

The idea of mindful eating is not new. In fact, the concept of mindful eating is mentioned in the age-old body of knowledge known as Ayurveda. Because the mind and digestion are linked, Ayurveda holds that how one eats is just as important as what one eats. Your digestion's effectiveness is influenced by a number of factors, including your body, environment, thoughts, and emotions. In general, conscious eating is the practice of paying attention to and studying what we eat, including all of its subtleties, our degrees of fullness, and how our food interacts with our digestive systems.
